Team India created history by crushing New Zealand by 96 runs to win the T20 World Cup 2026 in Ahmedabad. Defending a total of 255 runs, the bowlers dismissed the Black Caps for just 159. With this glorious victory, Suryakumar Yadav joined MS Dhoni and Kapil Dev as World Cup-winning captains.

Despite lifting the prestigious trophy, Suryakumar Yadav had a forgettable final after getting out for a golden duck. The captain tried an unorthodox shot but was caught in the deep. With his overall T20I batting form dropping drastically since taking on the leadership, it is time for Hardik Pandya to take over.

Suryakumar Yadav's Declining Strike Rate Raises Concerns

The first major reason to replace him is his rapidly declining strike rate. Youngsters like Sanju Samson, Abhishek Sharma, and Ishan Kishan easily score at over 180. However, Suryakumar is struggling to cross 150 in the format.

Over the last fifteen months, his batting average has dropped to just 27. His strike rate has fallen to 147, making him India's least effective batter right now.

Suryakumar Yadav Struggles Even Against Weaker Bowling Attacks

The second big reason is Suryakumar Yadav's terrible performance against much weaker bowling attacks. He scored an unbeaten 84 runs off 49 balls against the USA during India's T20 World Cup 2026 opener in Mumbai.

Following the match, he scored a mere 158 runs in eight innings. He played slow knocks of 12 against Namibia and 34 against the Netherlands. He completely failed to dominate the smaller bowling lineups, which is a major red flag for a captain. The batter finished the tournament with a golden duck in the final.

Suryakumar Yadav's Technical Weaknesses Get Exposed

The third reason is Suryakumar's exposed technical weakness. Opposing teams have finally figured out his game. Spinners have started bowling very wide outside the off-stump to stop him from using his favorite sweep shots.

His lack of raw power against slower off-pace deliveries makes him completely helpless when the fielding side successfully blocks the area directly behind the wicket.

Suryakumar Yadav's Slow batting in the Middle Overs

The fourth pressing reason is his total inability to score quick starts in the middle overs. In his prime, Suryakumar would easily smash boundaries from the very first ball he faced.

However, he now takes far too much time to settle down. This slow approach puts completely unnecessary pressure on the rest of the batters trying to score quickly.

Long-Term Planning for the Next T20 World Cup

The fifth and final reason is long-term future planning. The next T20 World Cup is scheduled for 2028, and Suryakumar will be nearly 38 years old. India cannot rely on an aging player when brilliant young talents like Riyan Parag and Yashasvi Jaiswal are waiting.

Handing the captaincy to Hardik Pandya will allow a smooth transition for the young team. This leadership change will ensure Team India remains a powerhouse in the shortest format.

Stepping down from the demanding captaincy role will completely free up Suryakumar to focus entirely on regaining his lost batting rhythm and dominating the bowlers once again.
