Indian T20I skipper Suryakumar Yadav has been dropped from Mumbai's Ranji Trophy squad for the upcoming Ranji Trophy opening game against Jammu & Kashmir, which will start on the 15th of October.
The Mumbai side had already announced that seasoned all-rounder Shardul Thakur, who has been a consistent performer for the Mumbai side, will be named as the skipper of the Ranji Trophy squad. This decision was made in accordance with Ajinkya Rahane stepping down from the role.
Skipper Suryakumar Yadav is meanwhile set to captain the Indian National Cricket Team in the shortest format of the game. Their next assignment will be in the Australia white-ball tour, which comprises 5 T20I matches starting from the 29th of October.
Suryakumar Yadav excluded, Shardul Thakur named Mumbai's captain
The Mumbai Cricket Team will initiate their Ranji Trophy 2025 campaign against Jammu & Kashmir at the J&K Cricket Stadium in Srinagar. They have hence named the squad for the first match, and Suryakumar Yadav is not included in it.
The senior selection committee of the Mumbai Cricket Association, consisting of Mr. Sanjay Patil (Chairman), Mr. Ravi Thaker, Mr Jitendra Thackeray, Mr Vikrant Yeligeti, and Mr Deepak Jadhav, has selected both veteran and young players to represent Mumbai in the Ranji Trophy opening match.
This shuts the door for the return of Suryakumar Yadav in the longest format of the game for India. The batter scored 8 runs in his only Test innings, post which he has not been cited for any other format in international cricket other than the T20I format.
Sarfaraz Khan to make a domestic comeback; Shivam Dube also named in the Mumbai Ranji Trophy squad
Mumbai has named Sarfarz Khan for a comeback after announcing his return following the injury he suffered in the Buchi Babu Invitational Tournament. He is all set to play in the team alongside his younger brother, Musheer Khan.
The batter was not considered for selection into the Indian Test side for the ongoing series between India and the West Indies. Tushar Deshpande also returns to the Mumbai setup after having missed the entire 2024/25 season due to an ankle injury. Mumbai lost to Vidarbha in the Ranji Trophy final of 2023-24.
While top performers like Sams Mulani, Tanush Kotian and Siddhesh Lad have been named in the squad, Shivam Dube has been named in the squad alongside India's U19 skipper Ayush Mhatre.
