Team India T20I skipper Suryakumar Yadav has revealed his biggest regret in his cricketing career after guiding the team to victory in the Asia Cup 2025 in the UAE. Suryakumar stated that he wanted to play under the legendary wicketkeeper-batter MS Dhoni’s captaincy for India but never had the opportunity.

The middle-order batter made his international debut under Virat Kohli against England in Ahmedabad in 2021 but didn’t get a chance to bat in that match. The careers of Suryakumar and the former captain never overlapped. Notably, the veteran had already retired by the time Yadav debuted for the Indian team.

MS Dhoni Has Been Very Cool - Suryakumar Yadav

Suryakumar Yadav expressed his regret at never having the chance to play under MS Dhoni. Speaking after leading India to an unbeaten Asia Cup victory in Dubai, Suryakumar shared that he admired Dhoni’s calm and composed approach while observing him from the opposition’s side.

"Firstly, I always wanted to get an opportunity when he was the captain of India. But I never got it. I saw him behind the stumps whenever I played against him," Suryakumar said during JITO Connect 2025.

"He has been very cool. One thing that I have learned from him when I played against him is to stay relaxed in all pressure situations, he looks around the game, sees around what is happening and then takes a call," he added.

Suryakumar and Dhoni have mostly been on opposite teams in the IPL. Dhoni played for Chennai Super Kings and Rising Pune Supergiant, while Suryakumar represented Kolkata Knight Riders and Mumbai Indians.

The only instance they were on the same side was during the 2021 T20 World Cup, when Dhoni served as mentor for Team India and Suryakumar was part of the squad.

Virat Kohli Is a Very Hard Task Master - Suryakumar Yadav

Suryakumar Yadav showered praise on Virat Kohli for his ability to bring out the best in players. He described Virat as a demanding leader who pushes limits, adding that he has a high-energy and unique approach both on and off the field.

"I think I made my debut under Virat bhai as captain. I think Virat Bhai is a very hard task master. He pushes your limits, and he wants the best. I mean, all the captains want the best from all the players, but he was full of energy on the field and off the field as well. He was a bit different," Surya added.

Rohit Sharma's Door Was Open 24/7 For Everyone - Suryakumar Yadav

The 35-year-old spoke about his experiences playing under Rohit Sharma. He recalled playing under Rohit for the Mumbai Indians and Team India. Suryakumar also stated that Rohit creates a positive atmosphere and always keeps his door open for teammates.

"Then Rohit bhai, under whom I played a lot of cricket for the IPL franchise and India. He is someone who gets everyone comfortable around them, an inspiration to all youngsters. His door was open 24/7 for everyone. That's a different quality which I learnt from him and also from the other captains," he concluded.
