It Is A 50-50 Call On Whether He Will Be Retained - Report On Suryakumar Yadav's Captaincy Future

There is a difference of opinion within the selection panel regarding Suryakumar Yadav's future as India's T20I captain. While some selectors are willing to continue backing him and give him more time, others are reportedly considering alternative options ahead of the upcoming international assignments.

"Therefore, Surya is definitely under pressure, and at the moment, it is a 50-50 call on whether he will be retained as captain," the source said.

The report suggests that no final decision has been made yet, with discussions expected to continue before India's next major T20 assignments.

Suryakumar Yadav's Recent Form Comes Under Scrutiny Amid Captaincy Debate

Suryakumar also endured a difficult IPL 2026 season with Mumbai Indians. The right-hander scored 195 runs in 10 matches at an average of 19.50 and a strike rate of 145.52. Reports added that he played through a wrist injury, which affected his ability to consistently play his trademark 360-degree shots.

Suryakumar delivered an inconsistent campaign during the 2026 ICC Men's T20 World Cup despite India winning the tournament. Apart from a match-winning unbeaten 84 against the United States, he found it difficult to make significant contributions against stronger bowling attacks.

Suryakumar finished the World Cup with 242 runs in nine innings. However, excluding his unbeaten 84 against the USA, he managed 158 runs from his other eight innings at an average of 22.50. Those numbers have fueled debate over his recent form as selectors review India's leadership options.
