India National Cricket Team T20I captain, Suryakumar Yadav, has finally opened up on the poor form of the explosive opening batsman Abhishek Sharma.

Abhishek Sharma was predicted by many cricket pundits to finish as the leading run-getter in the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026, but he has started off the tournament on a horrible note, registering a hat-trick of ducks.

"I am worried about the people who are worrying about Abhishek Sharma" - Suryakumar Yadav

Addressing the media ahead of the India National Cricket Team vs South Africa National Cricket Team match in the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026, Suryakumar Yadav stated that he is not at all worried about Abhishek Sharma's current form.

The Indian captain said that Abhishek is a very strong player, and he is confident that he can play very big innings and trouble any team once he sets. He jokingly said that he is not worried over the left-handed batter’s form, but for the opposition teams.

Suryakumar also issued a fiery warning to the opposition teams. Extending his support to the Punjab lad, Suryakumar said that Abhishek helped the team many times last year, so now it is the team’s turn to support him when things are not going well for him.

We will cover for him: India captain

Suryakumar Yadav said in the pre-match press conference: “I worry for the people who are worried about Abhishek's form, I worry about them. Why are they so worried about Abhishek's form? But I think about those teams who are going to play against him. That he has not yet scored a run. You know the rest of the answers.

When he scores a run, you have seen what happens. It happens, it's a team sport, it keeps going on. Now the team has a requirement that the boy should play with his identity. So he is trying to play. If it happens, then it's fine, if it doesn't, then we are there to cover. Last year he covered for us, now we will cover for him.”

Abhishek’s shocking slump

India is currently unbeaten in the ongoing T20 World Cup 2026, but Abhishek Sharma, one of India’s most dangerous T20 batters, is going through a very tough time. In the three matches he has played so far, he has gotten out for three ducks, and that is very surprising.

Abhishek usually attacks from the first few balls. His strike rate in T20 cricket is above 190, which shows how aggressive he is. But in this tournament, he has not been able to even settle at the crease. The slow pitches in this tournament have also not helped him.

Abhishek Sharma's T20 numbers

Since making his India debut in July 2024, Abhishek has become a key player for the Men in Blue, thanks to his fearless style and attacking mindset. In just 41 matches, he has scored 1,297 runs. The year 2026 has been full of ups and downs for him so far.

One of his biggest highlights this year was smashing a 14-ball fifty against New Zealand, which became the second-fastest T20I half-century for India. In the IPL, Abhishek made history by scoring 141 runs off just 55 balls. It was the highest individual score by an Indian player in the IPL's history.
