BBL team Sydney Sixers put out a viral post that caught the whole cricketing fraternity by storm. The franchise's social media handle announced that the star Indian cricketer Virat Kohli will play for the Sydney Sixers for the next two seasons of the Big Bash League.
It was a huge announcement that caught everybody in shock. Virat Kohli can appear for the Sydney Sixers or play in any other league apart from the IPL only if he retires from international cricket.

The post also raised the speculations of Kohli playing alongside his Australian counterpart, Steve Smith, for the same team. Smith has been associated with the Sydney Sixers right from the beginning and is a key player for them.
Kohli and Smith have been rivals on the field but have developed a great camaraderie off the field over the years. They have been seen respecting and greeting each other on numerous occasions during a match.
The truth behind the Sydney Sixers' post
The post by Sydney Sixers is not the truth, and Virat Kohli has no intention of playing in the BBL. It was an April Fool's post by the BBL team posted on the 1st April. The post garnered plenty of attention as Kohli has a huge fan following across the globe.
However, Kohli has no intentions to retire from international cricket and won't be eligible to play in the Big Bash League as of now. It is to be noted that no Indian men's cricketer under the contract of the BCCI is allowed to participate in any T20 foreign league or the Hundred.
The player will have to announce his retirement in order to be eligible to play outside leagues. While the players are not allowed to play in the T20 league, they can play in the 50-over competitions and first-class matches.
Meanwhile, the Sydney Sixers are the three-time BBL champions and have a great history in the league. Their last title win came way back in the 2020-21 season. Since then, they have finished as runners-up on two occasions but have failed to lift the trophy.
Where is Virat Kohli now?
Kohli is currently playing for Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in IPL 2025. The veteran cricketer is a key part of RCB's team and was retained by the franchise for INR 21 crore ahead of the IPL 2025 mega auction.
In the first match of this season against KKR, the 36-year-old batter played a match-winning knock of 59 off 36 balls and stayed unbeaten till the end. He struck 4 fours and 3 sixes during his knock while opening the batting and was involved in a blistering partnership of 95 runs for the first wicket with Phil Salt.
Kohli scored 31 off 30 balls in the second match against CSK. The innings was a less convincing one, and he struggled to get going on a slightly slower Chepauk wicket. However, RCB managed to win the match by a big margin of 50 runs.
