T20 World Cup 2024: ICC announces Match Officials' Panel for World Cup; 3 Indians included

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has announced the match officials for the ICC T20 World Cup 2024, scheduled to be played in the West Indies and the USA in June. The ICC revealed the list of 20 umpires and six match referees for the first round of the month-long prestigious tournament.

The T20 World Cup will feature 55 matches involving 20 nations. Each team will play four group matches, with the top two teams from each group advancing to the Super-8 stage. The semi-final matches are scheduled for June 26 and 27, and the final encounter will be held in Barbados on June 29.

The prestigious tournament will kick off with a match between the USA and Canada at the Grand Prairie Cricket Stadium in Dallas on Saturday, June 1. Co-hosts West Indies will start their World Cup campaign against Papua New Guinea at the Guyana National Stadium in Guyana on June 2.

The elite list of umpires for the upcoming tournament includes Richard Illingworth, Kumar Dharmasena, Chris Gaffaney, and Paul Reiffel. They all officiated in the Men's T20 World Cup 2022 Final. Richard Kettleborough, who officiated in the ODI World Cup 2023 final, is also part of the lineup.

The match referees' panel for the tournament includes Ranjan Madugalle, who officiated the 2022 Final, and the most experienced T20 referee, Jeff Crowe. Andrew Pycroft, who officiated in 149 T20Is, is part of the esteemed panel.

Wasim Khan, ICC General Manager, expressed satisfaction with the selection of match officials for the T20 World Cup. Wasim Khan highlighted the mix of experienced and high-performing officials. He expressed confidence in the officials' abilities.

“We are pleased to announce our team of match referees and umpires for the historic ICC Men’s T20 World Cup."

“Within the selected cohort, we have a compliment of experienced match officials and other high performing members who have been recognized for their strong and consistent performances. The throughput from the pathway programme will continue to see the development and emergence of high-quality match officials across the game," Wasim Khan said.

“With 20 teams and 55 matches played over 28 days, this will be the biggest T20 World Cup ever and we are proud of the team we have assembled. We are confident that our officials will perform strongly. We wish them all the best of luck for what promises to be a very exciting tournament,” he added.

England, the defending champions, won the 2022 edition by defeating Pakistan at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. They will commence their title defense against Scotland on June 4 in Barbados. Meanwhile, Pakistan, the runners-up, will face the USA in their first match in Dallas on June 6.
