With the highly-anticipated ICC T20 World Cup 2024 getting underway this week, former cricketers Michael Vaughan and Adam Gilchrist have revealed their predictions for the tournament.

A record 20 teams are participating in the ongoing tournament that is being played in the United States of America and the Caribbeans. The 20 teams have been divided into four groups of five teams each. The top two teams from each group will qualify for the Super 8s stage. The Super 8s stage will then decide the four semifinalists.

And while only time will tell which teams perform well in the competition, Michael Vaughan and Adam Gilchrist have revealed their picks. Michael Vaughan backed his country England and Australia to qualify for the finals before predicting England to win the title as well. England are also the defending champions while Australia had won the title in 2021.

On the other hand, Gilchrist backed Trans-Tasman rivals Australia and New Zealand as finalists. The former Australia wicketkeeper also picked his country to win the ninth edition of the T20 World Cup. Incidentally, both England and Australia are drawn in the same group for the ongoing tournament. Both the teams are in Group B along with Scotland, Namibia, and Oman and are the favorites to progress to the Super 8s stage.

USA off to a flyer:

Co-hosts USA and Canada locked horns against each other in the tournament opener on Sunday (June 2) and the former registered a thumping seven-wicket victory in Dallas.

Batting first, Canada posted a big total of 194 for 5 in the allotted 20 overs thanks to half-centuries from Navneet Dhaliwal and Nicholas Kirton. Dhaliwal scored 61 off 44 balls while Kirton scored 51 from 31. Shreyas Movva also played a crucial unbeaten cameo of 32 runs from just 16 balls.

In reply, the USA were off to a disastrous start as openers Steven Taylor (0) and Monank Patel (16) failed to deliver. However, Aaron Jones and Andries Gous scored brilliant half-centuries to take their team home. Jones remained unbeaten on 94 runs off just 40 balls while Gous scored 65 off 46 balls as the duo shared a match-winning stand stand of 131 runs for the third wicket.
