T20 World Cup 2024: No reserve day for second semifinal, playing conditions announced

There will be no reserve day for the second semifinal of the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup 2024, according to reports. The highly-anticipated T20 World Cup is scheduled to be played from June 1 to 29 in the Caribbean and the United States of America.

A number of eyebrows were raised when the ICC announced the schedule for the marquee event as there was a gap of only one day between the second semifinal and the final. Usually, there is a reserve day in place for the knockout games in the ICC competitions. However, with just one day gap between the semifinal and the final, many were left confused over the reserve day playing conditions.

However, Cricbuzz has reported that there would be no reserve day for the second semifinal. The ICC and the Cricket West Indies (CWI) have allotted an additional time of 250 minutes for the second semifinal to ensure that the game gets finished on the same day.

The first semifinal is scheduled to be played in Trinidad on June 26 from 8.30 pm local time (6 AM next day India time). There is a reserve day for that semifinal. As a result, the match can be extended to June 27 if rain plays spoilsport.

As far as the second semifinal in Guyana is concerned, it is scheduled to be played from 10.30 AM local time on June 27 (8.30 PM India time). With the ICC and CWI allotting four extra hours for the game to conclude, the umpires can wait for about eight hours to finish the T20.

"All four teams have exactly the same opportunity to finish a game. For performance reasons, to ensure teams do not have to 'play, travel, play' on consecutive days, the decision was taken to allocate the additional time for the second semi-final immediately post the game because the game is a 10.30 AM start, whilst the first semi-final is an evening start, which means it is not feasible to pay all additional time on the same day. This also ensures that fans in the stadium have the best chance of seeing a result on the day," a source in the know has told this website.

In case, the second semifinal is not completed on the same day due to rain, the team finishing higher in the Super Eight stage, will proceed to the final.

Here is the playing conditions for Reserve Day:

13.6.1 All matches will consist of one innings per side, each innings being limited to a maximum of 20 overs. All matches shall be of one day's scheduled duration provided that participating countries in a series may agree to provide for a reserve day on which an incomplete match may be replayed or continued from the scheduled day.

13.6.2 If the match is to be continued on the reserve day, every effort shall be made to complete the match on the scheduled day with any necessary reduction in overs taking place and only if the minimum number of overs necessary to constitute a match cannot be bowled on the scheduled day will the match be completed on the reserve day.

13.6.3 If the match has started on the scheduled day and overs are subsequently reduced following an interruption, but no further play is possible, the match will resume on the reserve day under the same assumption that the last ball was played on the scheduled day.

Tie-break rule:

Clause 16.10.7 in the playing conditions:

a) If a Semi-Final is tied, the teams shall compete in a Super Over to determine which team progresses to the Final. Refer to clause 16.3.1.2 and Appendix F.

b) If following a tie, weather conditions prevent the Super Over from being completed, or if the match is abandoned or a no result, then the team that finished first in its Second Round Group will progress to the Final.
