T20 World Cup 2024: Rohit Sharma and his men not worthy enough of being champions claims David Lloyd

Former England cricketer David Lloyd has stirred controversy by downplaying India's ability to make an impact in the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup 2024, which is set to be co-hosted by the USA and West Indies from June 1.

Notably, the Indian cricket team has not won the ICC trophy since their ICC Champions Trophy triumph under MS Dhoni’s captaincy in 2013. However, India was runner-up in the ICC World Cup 2023 at home and reached the final of the WTC twice.

Speaking about the T20 World Cup, the winner of the 2007 edition was eliminated in the league stage in 2021 and knocked out of the semi-final in the 2022 edition of the prestigious tournament.

Given the history, Lloyd criticized Team India's approach, describing them as a "predictable team" with limitations in taking risks both with the bat and the ball. Lloyd also pointed out their lack of silverware in the past decade, and this suggested a trend of poor performance by Team India at the ICC events.

However, the former England pacer admitted that India boasts talented players, but their risk-free strategy with both bat and ball dents their potential to be a dominant force in the ICC events despite having a star-studded lineup over the last decade.

Lloyd also claimed that the Men in Blue will have moments of brilliance, but ultimately they won't pose a significant threat to the opposition teams in the upcoming T20 World Cup 2024, and this bold statement fired up the ongoing debate about India’s performance in the ICC tournaments.

David Lloyd said on TalkSport Cricket Podcast: “(It is) quite a predictable team. The shackles are not off. I would think the opposition accept the quality… yeah, good players these. But they ain't taking a risk with bat or ball. So, you'd think of them as 'yeah, they will have their moments,' but they wouldn't be really threatening.”

Notably, India is placed alongside Pakistan, Ireland, the USA, and Canada in Group A at the upcoming T20 World Cup 2024. The Indian team will kick off their campaign against Ireland on June 5 in New York, followed by a mega clash against Pakistan on June 9. Before this, they will play a T20 World Cup warm-up fixture against Bangladesh in the USA on June 1.
