The ICC T20 World Cup is less than a year away, and all teams will look to identify their strongest combination for the multi-nation tournament. In this article, we will dive deep into he complete list of teams that have won the T20 World Cup.

T20 World Cup Winners List 2007-2024

India (2007, 2024)

India, the defending T20 World Cup champions, also won the inaugural edition held in South Africa in 2007 after a disappointing performance in the ODI World Cup in the West Indies.

The Indian team that went in as an underdog was quite young, with Yuvraj and Sehwag being the most experienced players in the squad.

The team led by MS Dhoni, who was captaining any side for the first time in his career exceeded everyone's expectations through their performance, which started with a bowl out against Pakistan.

India got out of jail as they were able to take the game against Pakistan into what was at that time called the bowl out, which India won comfortably.

Although it was not all hunky dory for the Men in Blue as they faced a narrow defeat against New Zealand but bounced back quickly to win their matches against England and South Africa.

Having said that, India had their task cut out while facing Australia in the semi-final and it needed a special effort from Yuvraj Singh with the bat and some aggressive bowling from Sreesanth to take India over the line.

India faced Pakistan for the second time in that tournament in the final game and clinched victory from the jaws of defeat in the last over of the game.

India had to wait for 17 long years to lift their second T20 World Cup trophy, having come close to doing so in 2014 against Sri Lanka.

The Rohit Sharma-led side played like a team that meant business and had one goal, i.e., winning the T20 World Cup.

The hunger was amplified even more after a humiliating ten-wicket loss against England in the semi-final of the last edition held in Australia.

That compelled India to adopt a more aggressive style of play in the 2023 ODI World Cup, which was carried forward in the 2024 T20 World Cup led by Rohit Sharma.

The Rohit Sharma-led side performed well in all three departments of the game and ended up winning the trophy in Barbados.

Pakistan (2009)

Pakistan has been one of the most consistent teams as far as performance in the T20 World Cup is concerned. The Men in Green made it to the final of the inaugural edition and went on to win the next one in 2009.

Yes, there is no doubt that Pakistan played well to win their maiden T20 World Cup title, but there were many other factors that contributed to Pakistan's win.

One of the factors was the conditions that were on offer. England has majority of the most part, witnessed cloudy weather at the start of the summer, and the case was no different in 2009.

Pakistan, which is known for its fast bowling resources, made full use of the conditions and yielded results in their favour.

Along with the bowling, it was the street-smart captaincy of Younis Khan that played a major part in helping Pakistan win their first major ICC title after 1992.

Pakistan had a good blend of youth and expierence with the likes of Shahid Afridi and Younis Khan in the batting department and Mohammad Amir and Umar Gul, who handled Pakistan's bowling.

England (2010, 2022)

It took a long time for England to win their first ICC title, but they finally were able to achieve it under the captaincy of Paul Collingwood.

They had all the bases covered in both batting and bowling, and took a fresh approach, which was different from what the traditionalists used to practice.

England were aggressive, especially with the bat, with the likes of Kevin Pietersen at the forefront. Peterson had already made a name for himself during the 2005 Ashes and played a major role with the bat.

In the batting department, England had the likes of Ryan Sidebottom, who would bring in that left arm angle, which was quite useful on slightly dry wickets that had something in it for the bowlers.

West Indies (2012, 2016)

West Indies, a team which is known for its big hitters, have been the recipients of two T20 World Cups, both under the leadership of Daren Sammy.

The Windies won their first T20 World Cup in 2012 in Sri Lanka after defeating the home side while defending a low total.

It took an all-around performance from Marlon Samuels to take the West Indies over the line in a hard-fought contest in Colombo against a strong Sri Lankan batting lineup.

As far as the 2016 championship is concerned, West Indies played like a team with a point to prove as they were engaged in a tussle with their board and did so under Sammy, who was being referred to as the non-playing captain.

Having said that, the West Indies found themselves on the back foot in the last over of the final against England, and it was the four big hits from Carlos Brathwaite that changed the game for the West Indies.

Sri Lanka (2014)

Sri Lanka's 2014 T20 World Cup win came as a surprise to many. Yes, they had the team to win it, but the same players had fallen short on many occasions before, so the experts did not give Sri Lanka a great deal of chance.

But the Island nation under the leadership of Lasith Malinga proved everyone wrong and found a way of winning matches from difficult situations, one of which included a come-from-behind win against New Zealand.

Having said that, Sri Lanka got a bit lucky as well in the semi-final against the West Indies, as the match was stopped due to rain at a time when both teams had an equal chance of winning.

As fate would have it, the rain delay went in favour of Sri Lanka, and they were through to the final, where they outplayed India to clinch their first T20 World Cup trophy.

Australia (2021)

The only trophy that was out of Australia's grasp wa the T20 World Cup and the ODI World Cup champions managed to win it during the 2021 edition held in the UAE.

As has been the case with Australia, they brought their A game to the tournament and outplayed every team by making full use of the spin-friendly conditions.

Australia's win was set up by the spinners with the likes of Adam Zampa and Glenn Maxwell leading from the front, which restricted the opposition to a low total.

If we look back at the tournament, the Australian batters were not put under pressure in most of the games and went about their business.

It was a collective team effort from Australia, a side where every player knew what his role was.
