Tamim Iqbal suffers 2 heart attacks while playing a match, put on life support

Former Bangladesh captain Tamim Iqbal was immediately hospitalized during the Dhaka Premier Division Cricket League 2025 match between Mohammedan Sporting Club and Shinepukur Cricket Club.

The incident occurred when Tamim Iqbal was fielding while playing for Mohammedan Sporting Club during the first innings of the match. He is also the captain of his side and it will be a big blow for his team.

It is believed that Tamim Iqbal felt some chest pain midway during the game and it was immediately decided to rush him to the hospital. A helicopter was also arranged to save time but he could not be flown from the venue which is located in Savar.

According to ESPNCricinfo, he was later taken to Fazilatunnesa Hospital, which is near to the ground, as per the match referee Debabrata Paul.

The match is being played at Bangladesh Krira Shikkha Protisthan No 3 Ground, Savar. It is the 44th match of the tournament, which is also Bangladesh's premier 50-over domestic tournament.

Tamim Iqbal on life support

After being rushed to the hospital, the situation didn't improve and Tamim has been kept on life support for now. According to RevSportz, an angioplasty is being performed on him in order to get his body in a better state.

The chief physician of the BCB Dr. Debashish Chowdhury confirmed that Tamim suffered a heart attack and revealed that there were efforts to rush him to the capital Dhaka. However, the opener experienced chest pain and thus, had to be kept under observation.

“He underwent initial checks at a local hospital, where mild heart issues were suspected. Efforts were made to transport him to Dhaka, but on the way to the helipad, he experienced severe chest pain and had to be rushed back. Medical reports later confirmed it was a massive heart attack,” Chowdhury was quoted as saying by Sportstar.

One of the greatest Bangladesh cricketers

Tamim is easily one of the greatest cricketers to have emerged from Bangladesh. The 36-year-old played 70 Tests, 243 ODIs, and 78 T20Is for his country. He is the second highest-run getter for Bangladesh across formats.

In ODIs, he is Bangladesh's highest run-scorer with 8357 runs at an average of 36.65 and a strike rate of 78.52 with 14 hundreds and 56 fifties. He has scored 5134 runs in Tests at an average of 38.89 with 10 centuries.

Despite being in the final stages of his professional career, he looked in excellent form with the bat in Dhaka Premier League. He has scored 368 runs in 7 matches so far in the season at an average of 73.60 and an impressive strike rate of 102.50.
