He will directly report to the PCB chairman. The 52-year-old brings a wealth of experience to his new position. Waqar's role will comprise overseeing the national teams and their coaching staff. Waqar will also address any matters or assignments considered appropriate by the PCB chairman that require his attention or expertise.
The former Pakistan coach will manage both the red-ball and white-ball teams, with current coaches Gary Kirsten (white-ball head coach) and Jason Gillespie (red-ball head coach) directly reporting to the PCB advisor. Waqar’s responsibilities will also cover coordination with the Pakistan selection committee, which has recently faced scrutiny.
Furthermore, Waqar’s appointment will also see him handling various tasks and projects assigned by the PCB chairman Naqvi. In addition to managing the national teams, the legendary fast bowler is expected to oversee domestic cricket, the high-performance center, coaching staff, and groundsmen.
With an illustrious career that included 87 Tests and 262 ODIs, Waqar will play a crucial role in planning, strategizing, and developing the game in Pakistan.
Waqar has been given these responsibilities to allow the PCB chairman to focus more on governance, infrastructure, administration, commercial deals, and the broader future of Pakistan cricket.
Notably, he was initially hired as a consultant; there are plans to formalize his position in the future. His role will be similar to Rob Key's position with the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB), where the Englishman serves as the managing director of the men's team.
Waqar Younis is capable of making the right decisions: PCB
The PCB source was quoted as saying by Cricbuzz: “The PCB believed there was a need for an experienced individual who understands the language of cricketers and is capable of making the right decisions, which is why Waqar was brought on board.”
Meanwhile, after the news of Waqar’s appointment broke out in the media, Tanveer Ahmed took to his social media handle to criticize the former coach’s appointment to the board. Tanveer has described Waqar’s appointment as a PCB advisor as the worst decision made in the history of Pakistan cricket.
Tanveer Ahmed posted on X: “Waqar Younis ko cricket board main job dena meri nazar main history ka sab say worst decision hain. (Appointing Waqar Younis to a role in the board is, in my view, the worst decision in the history of cricket.”
