India’s ace batter Virat Kohli sent shockwaves into the cricketing world after announcing his decision to quit as Test captain of the team after the 1-2 Test series loss to South Africa recently. He took to social media to post a heartfelt message announcing his decision and received tributes from all over the globe, with Shane Warne being one of them.
The ace Australian spin legend Shane Warne has lauded Virat Kohli time and again for supporting Test cricket with a passion. Kohli made sure that the Indian team excelling in the Test format was his prime objective and achieved his goal as India reigned no.1 in ICC Test team rankings for five years straight.
Kohli has been the most successful Test captain India has ever produced. After taking over the reins from MS Dhoni, he has led India in 68 Test matches and secured 40 wins at a win percentage of 58.82.
He led India to its maiden Test series win in Australia in 2018-19 and also won the Test series in Sri Lanka in 2015, a victory that India registered in the Emerald Island after 22 years. India also won the Test series in West Indies in 2019. Apart from this, India reached the final of the inaugural ICC World Test Championship (WTC) final, where they lost to New Zealand in Southampton last year.
Congrats Virat Kohli On What You And Your Team Has Achieved Under Your Leadership: Shane Warne
Kohli had taken over as India Test captain from MS Dhoni, who retired from the format mid-way into the 2014-15 Border-Gavaskar Trophy down under. He then became the all-format captain in 2017 and led India to the final of the ICC Champions Trophy. India also remained unbeaten at home under Kohli’s captaincy, who won 11 series on their own soil.
Shane Warne congratulated Kohli and Team India on achieving great heights in Test cricket and thanked him for supporting Test cricket with a passion.
“Congrats @imVkohli on what you and your team has achieved under your leadership and thankyou for supporting test cricket so passionately and insuring that it stays the number 1 form of the game,” Warne tweeted.
