'That's Why New Zealand Could Win The Test Championship' : Sunil Gavaskar Reveals Why Kiwis Were Able To Become The Test Champions

Former Indian opener Sunil Gavaskar has opined the exact reason why India has failed to win an ICC tournament despite having an outstanding team. India’s recent failure at the World Test Championship final against New Zealand in Southampton resurfaced the debate on whether they can handle the pressure of the big games. But Sunil Gavaskar feels that conditions in Southampton were highly favourable for New Zealand and is the primary reason why they won.

The Indian team has not won an ICC event since 2013 and has frequently choked in the knockouts or final ever since. New Zealand has arguably been the bogey side for them as the men in blue succumbed to them in the WTC final for the second consecutive time. The Kiwis stunned them in the 2019 World Cup semi-final when they defended a modest total against a star-studded Indian batting unit.

Sunil Gavaskar feels that there exists a mental blockage within the Indian side that is stopping them from winning an ICC title. But the 71-year old spoke specifically about the WTC final and observed that the conditions highly favoured the Kiwis. Thus, Gavaskar believes that in the face of that, they found it easy.

“If you look at the last few matches, that seems to be the case. Perhaps there is a mental blockage because of which we are not able to win an ICC title. But about this WTC title, we should remember that the conditions were exactly the ones that New Zealand players face. So they found it a little easy and that was not case with India,” Gavaskar told Sports Tak.

Sunil Gavaskar underlined that one should think before pointing fingers as conditions were conducive to the once New Zealand face. He highlighted that the Kiwis used them to significant effect and hence, could become the Test champions.

“We should remember that before pointing fingers at our team. Think of the fact that the conditions were like New Zealand and that’s what their team took advantage of. That’s why they could win the World Test Championship,” he added.
