Former India coach Ravi Shastri had predicted that now that Ben Stokes has been officially named the new England Test captain, the adrenaline of the leadership post might elevate him into greatness.

Ben Stokes, who is one of the leading all-rounders in the world, was on Thursday named as England cricket team’s Test captain. The senior allrounder was always the front-runner for the role since Joe Root’s resignation after five long years in the top job. England is at its lowest point in Test cricket, after the 0-4 drubbing at the hands of Australia.

This resulted in the ECB firing head coach Chris Silverwood and director of men’s cricket team Ashley Giles stepping down from his post. Former England batter Rob Key was named the new managing director of the England team and his first job proved to be offering Ben Stokes the England Test captaincy.

“The adrenaline of captaincy – not that he needs it – could fire Stokes up to be something even more than the incredible player he is now. The important relationship is with the captain – the moment there is friction, things go downhill. But they will be fine because the England I saw last year, they have enough talent and skill to compete. There’s no doubt about that in my mind. It’s all about their mindset,” Shastri said.

Stokes has been made the England captain at a time when the side has rarely won a game in the last year. England is also currently at the bottom of the 2021-23 World Test Championship race.

“I am honored to be given the chance to lead the England Test team. This is a real privilege, and I’m excited about getting started this summer. I want to thank Joe (Root) for everything he has done for English Cricket and for always being a great ambassador for the sport all across the world. He has been a massive part of my development as a leader in the dressing room, and he will continue to be a key ally for me in this role,” Ben Stokes said after been named the new England Test captain.
