New Zealand skipper Kane Williamson may have pulled out of the inaugural season of ‘ The Hundred‘ but he has decided to stay with his franchise, Birmingham Phoenix, and act as a mentor to the players.
Williamson, who led New Zealand to their maiden ICC title in 21 years last month courtesy an eight-wicket win over India in the World Test Championship final in Southampton, pulled out of “The Hundred” on Friday to give a rest to his elbow that has troubled in the last 7-8 months.
Williamson had missed the second Test of the England series due to the same elbow injury and he played the WTC final while nursing the same.
The New Zealand skipper was signed up for $1,58,000 by Birmingham Phoenix and while he will not feature in his capacity as a player, he has decided to stay back and guide the players in his capacity as a mentor.
According to a report in 1News, New Zealand’s swashbuckler Finn Allen is likely to replace Kane Williamson in the Hundred. Allen made his international T20 debut during the last home summer.
Meanwhile, Kane Williamson will now hope to get completely fit before the T20 World Cup, which is scheduled to take place in the UAE and Oman between October 17-November 15.
Before the T20 World Cup, New Zealand is scheduled to play the white-ball series in Bangladesh and Pakistan and the Kiwis will hope he recovers from his injury to lead the team on the park.
