Former Indian cricketer Suresh Raina has opened up on Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli’s return to the Indian T20I setup ahead of the ICC T20 World Cup 2024. As the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 comes closer a lot of questions are being waited to be answered. From who will be the captain of the team to what the team composition will look like, all of it will be answered in the tournament which begins in June.

Former Indian legend Suresh Raina has recommended a new position for star batter Virat Kohli who has yet to play a T20 game since the 2022 T20 WC semi-final in November 2022.

Virat Kohli started his batting career in the shortest format as a number 5 batter before slotting into his most preferred position of number 3. His antics from number 3 have helped India time in and time out and his experience as well as contribution will be crucial for the Indian team as they look forward to putting their hands on a major ICC trophy for the first time since 2013.

The 35-year-old will make his first T20 appearance in the 2nd T20 against Afghanistan on 14th January after missing out on the first one due to personal issues. In his absence, Tilak Varma did well as a 1st down batter, scoring 26 off 22 while chasing a target of 159.

Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill had opened for India but the skipper had to depart for a 2-ball duck as he was run out by Ibrahim Zadran while his partner left the crease after scoring 23. Shivam Dube was the team’s star performer and was adjudged as the man of the match for his 60 off 40.

Jitesh Sharma and Rinku Singh scored quickfire 31 and 16 as India won by 6 wickets. It was an overall great performance by Rahul Dravid’s men as they were in a commanding position right from the start and are well on course for a 3-0 whitewash.

This particular series is India’s final International T2o series and this is a perfect chance for them to set the best combinations.

Virat Kohli might not have played T20 cricket for over a year now but Suresh Raina still feels that Kohli is the most experienced in the squad. He believes that young batters like Yashasvi Jaiswal, Rinku Singh, and Shubman Gill will provide flamboyance and aggression and Virat Kohli will act as a glue, holding the top order with solidity. Suresh Raina also feels that Kohli will excel in USA and West Indies’ challenging conditions.

“I think Kohli should bat at No. 3. His experience will bring some solidity, especially in the challenging pitches in the US and the Caribbean. There are fearless, young cricketers like Jaiswal, Rinku Singh, or Shubman Gill, but Rohit and Kohli will give the unit a lot of solidity. Their presence is very important when we chase a target, especially in a high-pressure event like the World Cup.” – Suresh Raina said.
