Indian Test captain Virat Kohli has confirmed once more that there is no rift or problem between him and new ODI and T20I captain Rohit Sharma. There had been rumored reports of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma not wanting to play under each other’s captaincy.
This came after Virat Kohli reportedly asked the BCCI for a break after the Test series in South Africa as he wanted to spend time with his family and celebrate the birthday of his daughter Vamika, who turns one in January.
Rohit Sharma has already been ruled out of the Test series after suffering a hamstring injury on his left leg during a nets session. He was recently named the new ODI and T20I captain by the BCCI and was also appointed the new vice-captain of the Test team, replacing out of form Ajinkya Rahane.
Meanwhile, the reports which have caused much uproar on social media, suggested that Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli had a rift which was allegedly due to Kohli not liking being removed as ODI captain, something he wanted to continue despite leaving the T20I captaincy after the T20 World Cup 2021.
“There is no problem between me and Rohit Sharma – I have been clarifying since the last 2.5 years – I am literally tired. India will miss the experience of Rohit Sharma in the Test series, wish him a speedy recovery,” Kohli said during the presser on the eve of the Indian team’s departure for the South Africa series.
Virat Kohli Lauds Rohit Sharma’s Captaincy, Calls Him Tactically Sound
Rohit Sharma was seen as the next logical captain of the Indian white-ball team by many experts given his ability to win championships, something Virat Kohli failed to do during his five-year tenure as India’s ODI and T20I captaincy. India reached the final of the 2017 Champions Trophy and the ICC World Test Championship. Kohli also led India into the semis of the 2019 ICC World Cup as well but failed to win any ICC title for the team, despite brilliance in the bilateral series.
On the other hand, Rohit Sharma led the Indian team, which was missing Virat Kohli, to the 2018 Asia Cup title and also captained the Men in Blue to the victory in the 2018 Nidahas T20 tri-nation series in Sri Lanka.
Kohli was appreciative of Rohit Sharma’s captaincy skills and said: “Rohit Sharma is a very good captain, he is tactically sound – we have seen in IPL and for India. My responsibility is to push the team in the right direction, along with Rahul Bhai and Rohit, both of them will have my full support moving forward”.
Rohit has also led Mumbai Indians (MI) to five IPL titles since 2013 and many hope that he’ll end India’s drought for an ICC trophy.
