Former Team India pacer S Sreesanth shared a humorous memory involving legendary captain and wicketkeeper-batter MS Dhoni from their playing days. Sreesanth also stated that Dhoni helped him realize his potential as a captain and friend, but added that he could not understand his own potential.
Sreesanth was part of India’s World Cup-winning squads in 2007 and 2011 under the captaincy of MS Dhoni. He didn’t completely live up to his potential as a bowler, but showed his talent through memorable moments on the field. Sreesanth played his last match for India in 2011 before the match-fixing scandal.
There Were So Many Girlfriends in Those Days - S Sreesanth
S Sreesanth recalled a humorous incident during a match when MS Dhoni scolded him for not paying attention to his fielding. Dhoni jokingly said that Sreesanth could “catch a girlfriend from every ground” because of the many girlfriends around at that time.
“There were so many girlfriends in those days that he thought I would catch a girlfriend from every ground,” said Sreesanth on Padamjeet Sehrawat.
”The one captain, the one friend who made me understand that my potential could have taken me high, but you could not understand your own potential,” he added.
The incident occurred during a 2010 Test match between India and New Zealand. MS Dhoni shouted at Sreesanth to get to his fielding position, adding that his girlfriend wasn’t present where he was standing.
Someone Who Actually Handled Him Really Well Was MS Dhoni - Robin Uthappa
Former India cricketer Robin Uthappa said that MS Dhoni could handle S Sreesanth’s unpredictable behavior. Uthappa revealed that Sreesanth argued with Dhoni about a run-out at the non-striker’s end during a match against Australia in Hyderabad.
“It was just after the World Cup, and we were playing Australia in Hyderabad. And I think it was either Andrew Symonds who had backed up,” Uthappa said on a recent episode of YouTube show ‘Wake Up With Sorabh’.
"And then Sree (Sreesanth) stopped, took the stumps off and goes ‘How is that? How is that?’ So MS came running from there, pulled him and said ‘just go bowl bro’. Someone who actually handled him really well was MS,” he added.
Still Turn Out to Be a Dangerous Bowler - Robin Uthappa on S Sreesanth
Robin Uthappa recalled that he, S Sreesanth, and Gautam Gambhir handled sledging in matches against Australia, while the rest of the team acted like “gentlemen.”
He also stated that Sreesanth’s outswingers and bowling action are among India’s best. Uthappa added that Sreesanth currently bowls around 125 km/h and, with regular practice and discipline, can remain a formidable bowling threat.
“He would be bowling at around 125 kph now, if he can keep his discipline and keep working on his bowling, he can build up his pace into the 130s and still turn out to be a dangerous bowler,” Uthappa said.
Sreesanth made his international debut in 2005 under Rahul Dravid but found success under MS Dhoni. He recorded figures of 6/122 in a Test match against Sri Lanka in Kanpur in 2009. The pacer helped India beat South Africa in Durban, taking 3 wickets in the second innings to level the series 1-1 in 2010.
