Australian captain Tim Paine has hinted that veteran opener David Warner could play the third Test against India while Will Pucovski is not far away from assuming full fitness and making his Test match debut.
Paine said that Warner’s recovery is on track and he might well be included in the New Year Test.
David Warner has missed a majority of the Australian home summer after he suffered a groin injury during the second One-day International against India at the Sydney Cricket Ground.
Since then, the southpaw has missed out on the last ODI, three-match T2OI series, and the first two Tests of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
“David looks very good. He has started running between the wickets, so early signs with him very good for the third Test, which is awesome for us,” Tim Paine at the post-match conference after Australia’s eight-wicket defeat to India in the Boxing Day Test.
As far as Will Pucovski is concerned, Tim Paine said that the rookie opener is not far from making his Test debut for Australia.
Pucovski, who started the 2020/21 Sheffield season with consecutive double-hundreds, was primed to make his debut in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy before a blow on his head via a Kartik Tyagi bouncer in the warm-up game left him concussed and out of the reckoning for the first two Tests.
“Pucovski is not far away to return to play. He is pretty close to return,” he added.
