The 44-year-old cricketer-turned-commentator Aakash Chopra shared his take on Virat Kohli’s captaincy in T20Is and said that the modern-day great received unfair criticism after India got knocked out of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2021.

India lost back-to-back games in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2021 in UAE against Pakistan and New Zealand and the Men In Blue failed to qualify for the semi-finals.

Kohli had announced before the World Cup that he was going to step down as T20I skipper after the marquee tournament. Later, he was sacked as ODI skipper and he relinquished Test captaincy after the Test series defeat in South Africa earlier this year.

Meanwhile, Chopra said that Kohli, who won 30 T20Is as a skipper, played just one T20 World Cup as a captain and he was blamed by the fans for having just one bad day.

“There was just one T20 World Cup, that he played as a captain, where we reached the semi-final (knocked out in Super 12). To be blamed because of just one bad day, it was unfair towards him,” Akash Chopra said on ShareChat’s audio chatroom session.

“Not that I am a Kohli captaincy fan, I saw flaws in his captaincy and criticized where required, but a trail by fans situation shouldn’t have been created,” he added

Former India National Cricket Team opener further said that Team India will have to soon find a successor for current skipper Rohit as he is not getting any younger. He added that the star all-rounder Hardik Pandya could be one of the possible captaincy candidates.

“Since Rohit Sharma won’t get any younger, a plan of succession is required. Hardik Pandya could lead the Indian Team,” Chopra added

Notably, KL Rahul, Rishabh Pant, Jasprit Bumrah and Hardik Pandya are looked at as future captains of the Indian team.
