Former Australia batsman Tom Moody is reported to soon apply for the role of India‘s head coach once Ravi Shastri’s tenure ends at the conclusion of the T20 World Cup in November.

He was shortlisted for the interview in 2017 and 2019 as well but Shastri got the role then. Now, with Shastri likely to step away, Tom Moody will give another try at the job, according to a report in Foxsports.com.au.

Tom Moody coached Sri Lanka to the final of the 2007 50-over World Cup, where they lost to Australia in the final. He has worked for years in the IPL first with Punjab Kings (PBKS) before moving to Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH).

His and David Warner’s partnership blossomed in 2016 as SRH won their maiden IPL title. He was replaced by England 2019 World Cup-winning coach Trevor Bayliss but later returned as SRH’s Director Of Cricket. This season, though, SRH finished at the bottom of the table.

Also, the same report in Fox Cricket added that “Sunrisers’ owners are influential figures in the BCCI,” and that may help Tom Moody to his dream job as India’s next head coach.

VVS Laxman, Anil Kumble also in the race

Another report in PTI claimed that the BCCI might ask former cricketers Anil Kumble and VVS Laxman to apply for the job.

Kumble was India’s head coach in the 2017 Champions Trophy when India lost to Pakistan in the final while Laxman has been associated with SRH for a long time and has worked with Tom Moody. Kumble is currently the head coach of Punjab Kings in the IPL.

There is going to be another big change in the Indian team: captain Virat Kohli has announced that he will be stepping down as the T20I captain after the T20 World Cup. Rohit Sharma, the current vice-captain, is likely to take over from Kohli. KL Rahul or Rishabh Pant could be named the next vice-captain.
