Champion wrestler Bajrang Punia had added another medal to India’s Tokyo 2020 tally as the world No.2 beat Khazakistan’s Daulet Niyazbekov 8-0 to claim the bronze medal.
Punia defeated Niyazbekov in a freestyle 65 kg wrestling competition to help India level with their best-ever performance in Olympics.
India have now won six medals in Tokyo 2020 similar to what they achieved nine years ago in the London Olympics.
After having started off brilliantly in the Quarter-Finals, Bajrang Punia stumbled in the semis, losing 5-12.
However, the champion wrestler came back brilliantly in the bronze medal game despite nursing an injury to bring glory for himself as well as the entire nation.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to his official Twitter account to congratulate Bajrang Punia where he wrote that the champion wrestler has made every Indian proud and happy.
“Delightful news from #Tokyo2020! Spectacularly fought @BajrangPunia. Congratulations to you for your accomplishment, which makes every Indian proud and happy,” tweeted PM Modi.
Former and current Indian cricketers also took to their Twitter accounts to congratulate Punia on his stellar achievement.
