UP Warriorz players Sophie Ecclestone and Kiran Navgire have been fined for a breach of the code of conduct in WPL 2024. The incident happened in their match against Delhi Capitals women. In the end, UP won the match to keep their hopes alive in the tournament this season.

Both the players were fined 10 percent of their match fees. Meanwhile, UP Warriorz won the match on the back of Deepti Sharma’s all-round heroics by one run. Deepti scored a half-century and also took a hat-trick as the Warriorz managed to defend a lowish total. In the process, Deepti became the second cricketer to take a hat-trick in the WPL after Issy Wong became the first to do it last season.

“UP Warriorz’s Sophie Ecclestone and Kiran Navgire have been fined 10% of their match fees for breaching the WPL Code of Conduct during their team’s match against Delhi Capitals at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, Delhi on Friday”.

“Both Sophie and Kiran admitted to the Level 1 offense under Article 2.2 which relates to the abuse of cricket equipment or clothing, ground equipment or fixtures and fittings during a match. For Level 1 breaches of the Code of Conduct, the Match Referee’s decision is final and binding.” read the statement from WPL.

UP Warriorz Still In The Hunt

UP Warriorz managed to score a lowish total of 138 for 9 with the bat. Deepti who was promoted to batting at number three scored 59 off 48. Only three UP batters scored in double digits including Deepti who were skipper Alyssa Healy (29) and Grave Harris (14). Rest all batters scored in single digits.

Delhi had the chase in their grasp until skipper Meg Lanning was anchoring the innings. Once she was dismissed with the team score on 93, the Delhi Capitals batting lineup collapsed. From 93 for 3, they were bowled out for 137 in the final over.

The final over was bowled by Grace Harris with Delhi needing 10 runs to win. After Deepti’s individual hat trick earlier in the innings, Harris’s over also saw three dismissals. The first to go was Radha Yadav bowled, Jess Jonassen was run out the next ball and with two needed to win off two balls, Titas Sadhu was the last batter to fall.

The win kept UP Warriorz in the hunt. They will now play Gujarat Giants in their final game on March 11. RCB Women plays DC Women in a game before them on March 10. They play Mumbai Indias in their final game both of which are must-win for the Bangalore side.

Previous Mumbai Indians women became the first team to qualify for the final courtesy of their win over Gujarat Giants in their previous game. Skipper Harmanpreet Kaur’s unbeaten 95 sealed the game for them with Mumbai successfully chasing 13 off the final over.

I thought… this is exactly cricket, anything can happen. Probably didn’t get the partnerships we were after. We spoke about 150 being a competitive total. I think Deepti did really well but we needed a few more partnerships. Only when we got that last wicket did we feel we’d truly won it. When 2 of 2 are needed and you need 1 wicket, you’re never really sure. Can’t fault the girls irrespective of the result, proud of their effort. We held our nerve when we needed to and got the job done. Really proud of the girls” said Healy after UP’s nervy win over Gujarat.
