The second Test of the three-match series between the England National Cricket Team and the Sri Lanka National Cricket Team, which is part of the ongoing cycle of the ICC World Test Championship, started on August 29 and finished on September 1 at the Lord's Cricket Ground in London.

Winning the toss and bowling first, Sri Lanka were not able to make the most of the early wickets they got, allowing the home team to go from 82/3 to 427/10. Joe Root was the face behind England making a comeback in the innings and putting Sri Lanka under pressure while the rest of the damage was done by Gus Atkinson.

Joe Root smashed 143 runs off 206 balls in the innings, with 18 fours, and it was his 33rd Test ton. Atkinson, meanwhile, surprised everyone with his batting by smashing 118 runs off 115 balls, with 14 fours and 4 sixes. For Sri Lanka, Asitha Fernando shined with a 5-wicket haul in the innings.

When the visitors came to bat, they looked miserable against the home team's bowling attack, and if not for Kamindu Mendis' sensational 74 runs knock, they would have gotten all-out below the score of 150. Eventually, they posted 196 runs on the board, and for the English team, everyone was among wickets, except Joe Root.

It was England's turn to bat next and they were not under any kind of pressure, having taken a good lead, but things didn't change much from the first innings. The top order once again collapsed, and it was savior Joe Root who once again stepped up with the bat.

The modern-day great slammed an exceptional 103 runs, and with the ton, he broke Alastair Cook's record for most centuries by an Englishman in the history of Test cricket. It was Root's 34th Test ton and overall 50th in international cricket.

Meanwhile, the hosts were bundled out for 251 as all the Lankan bowlers did a good job and a target of 483 runs was set for visitors. In the 4th innings, a good start was a compulsion for Sri Lanka, but they didn't get it and were reduced to 60/3.

Seniors Dimuth Karunaratne (55) and Dinesh Chandimal (58) batted quite well and showed a good fight, but after their dismissals, Sri Lanka were reduced to 200/7.

In the end, Dhananjaya de Silva also got out after scoring 50 runs and Sri Lanka were bowled out for 292, losing the match by a huge margin of 190 runs. Also, England have now taken an unassailable 2-0 lead in the series.
