Team India, on Monday (February 26), beat England by five wickets in the fourth Test in Ranchi to clinch the five-Test series with a match to go. India are now leading the series 3-1. With the win, India have further strengthened their position in the ICC World Test Championship points table (WTC points table).

Chasing 192, the hosts were off to a solid start with openers Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal adding 84 runs for the first wicket. However, India suffered an inexplicable collapse and lost five wickets in quick time to find themselves reeling at 120 for 5.

However, Shubman Gill and Dhruv Jurel shared an unbeaten stand of 72 runs to take the team home. Gill remained unbeaten on 52 while Jurel scored 39.

Earlier in the game, England scored 353 runs in the first innings. The visitors were reeling at 112 for 5 at one stage before a century from their former captain Joe Root rescued them. Root and Ben Foakes (47) shared a century-plus stand to steady the ship for their team. Root eventually ran out of partners and remained unbeaten on 122.

For India, Ravindra Jadeja picked up four wickets while debutant Akash Deep claimed three wickets. With the bat, India were cruising at 112 for 2 before a collapse saw them getting reduced to 177 for 7. Dhruv Jurel, who made his debut in the last Test, and Kuldeep Yadav rescued India by adding 76 runs for the eighth wicket.

The hosts were eventually bowled out for 307 runs with Jurel’s 90 being the highest score. For England, Shoaib Bashir picked up five wickets while Tom Hartley claimed three. In the second innings, England were bowled out for just 145 runs. Barring Zak Crawley (60), no other England batter could provide any resistance with the bat.

Before the start of the recently-concluded fourth Test, India were in the second spot while England were in the eighth spot in the ICC World Test Championship Points Table (WTC points table). In the updated table, India continue to be in the second spot although they have breached the PCT of 60 and now have a PCT of 64.58.

On the other hand, England are still reeling at the eighth spot with a PCT of 19.44. New Zealand are currently leading the WTC points table with 36 points and a PCT of 75.
