India emerged victorious in the second Test match against South Africa at the Newlands Park in Capetown. The Rohit Sharma-led defeated the opposition by 7 wickets and drew the series by a margin of 1-1. This has been the first time since 2010-11, India managed to draw a series in South Africa.

South Africa won the toss and opted to bat first. The decision to put India into the field first didn’t work out for the Proteas as Indian bowlers were all over the hosts. They didn’t let them settle at all as they picked wickets in a flash and put the Dean Elgar-led side under tremendous pressure in Cape Town.

Mohammed Siraj was the shining light for India as he picked 6 wickets in just 9 overs and helped India bundled out South Africa for just 55 runs. Jasprit Bumrah and Mukesh Kumar also chipped in and bagged two wickets each. For hosts, Kyle Verreynne (15) was the top scorer for the team.

India had a great start to their innings. Although they lost Yashasvi Jaiswal for a duck but skipper Rohit Sharma (39) and Shubman Gill (36) made sure they made up for the early blow. The duo added 55 runs partnership for the second wicket and it seemed that they would take the game away from the opposition.

However, they couldn’t cash on the starts they got and perished on the verge of hitting half-centuries. After their wickets, Virat Kohli (46) played a decent hand on the pitch, which was difficult to bat on. In two sessions, the Rohit Sharma-led side was in control but the third session of the Day 1 was terrible for them.

India was 153/4 at one stage and in no time got out all out for 153. Thanks to their rollicking effort with the ball in the first innings, they took a lead of 98 runs. For South Africa, Nandre Burger, Kagiso Rabada, and Lungi Ngidi picked three wickets each.

South Africa didn’t have a great outing in their second innings as well. Indian bowlers picked 3 wickets before stumps on Day 1. But Aiden Markram played a magnificent innings on Day 2 and looked unfazed by wickets falling at the other end. He scored a terrific century and made sure that his side took the lead and put the visitors into bat again.

India bundled out South Africa for 176 runs and set themselves a target of 79 runs. Jasprit Bumrah was the pick of bowlers as he picked 6 wickets and made sure that he kept his team a target of less than 100 runs on the board.

In the chase, Yashasvi Jaiswal (28) came out all guns blazing and provided India with a great start. But he lost his wicket after a 44 runs opening partnership with skipper Rohit Sharma. Shubman Gill (10) tried to but perished to Kagiso Rabada on a ball that was kept low.

Virat Kohli (12) also lost his wicket in an attempt to score quickly. But skipper Rohit Sharma (17*) made sure that he stayed there till the end and helped his team win the game by 3 wickets and level the series.
