The BCCI selection committee's latest squad announcement has produced one of the biggest stories in Indian cricket, with teenage sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi earning a place in India's T20I squad for the tour of Ireland and England.

The 15-year-old prodigy has rapidly risen through the ranks over the last two seasons of the Indian Premier League (IPL) and now finds himself on the verge of representing the senior India National Cricket Team.

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi Named in India T20I Squad

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, 15, has officially been named in India's T20I squad for the upcoming Ireland and England tour, putting him in line to become one of the youngest cricketers ever to represent the country at the senior level.

The left-handed batter has already built a reputation for fearless strokeplay and remarkable power-hitting despite his young age. Having represented Bihar, Rajasthan Royals and India Under-19s, Sooryavanshi's rapid development has impressed selectors enough to fast-track him into the national setup.

The youngster's rise has been nothing short of remarkable. He became the youngest player to secure an IPL contract when Rajasthan Royals signed him ahead of IPL 2025, before going on to become the youngest centurion in men's T20 cricket.

Why Vaibhav Sooryavanshi Was Selected in India T20I Squad?

He was picked because of his sensational IPL performances. While Rajasthan Royals fell short of lifting the IPL 2026 trophy, Sooryavanshi dominated the tournament like few players before him. The teenager finished the season with 776 runs in 16 innings at an astonishing strike rate of 237.30 while averaging 48.50.

His efforts earned him the Orange Cap, the Most Valuable Player (MVP) award, and the Best Emerging Player award. In doing so, he became the first cricketer in IPL history to win both the MVP and Emerging Player awards in the same season.

Sooryavanshi also rewrote the record books by smashing 72 sixes during IPL 2026, surpassing Chris Gayle's long-standing record of 59 sixes in a single season.

Across his two IPL seasons, Sooryavanshi has scored 1,028 runs in 23 innings at a staggering strike rate of 228.95, including two centuries, six fifties, 81 fours and 96 sixes. Those numbers made his Vaibhav Sooryavanshi call-up almost impossible to ignore.

Is Vaibhav Sooryavanshi the Youngest Cricketer to Play for India?

Not yet. However, if he gets an opportunity during the Ireland or England series, he would become the youngest India player in history. At just 15 years of age, Sooryavanshi would comfortably break several age-related records in Indian cricket.

For context, Sachin Tendulkar made his India debut in Test cricket at 16 years and 205 days during the 1989 tour of Pakistan. Sooryavanshi is still younger than that and could create a unique piece of history if selected in the playing XI.

Will Vaibhav Sooryavanshi Have an Injury-Prone Career?

The youngster's explosive batting style has naturally sparked discussions about workload management and long-term fitness. Speaking to NDTV, sports science expert Vaibhav Daga explained that predicting future injuries at this stage is impossible and depends on several factors.

"On the injury side, it is very difficult to predict anything specific at this stage. He may or may not experience injuries depending on multiple variables such as biomechanics, strength, workload, and how his body adapts over time. Injuries in sport are always a possibility, but they are never guaranteed. The focus must remain on prevention and proper monitoring."

Daga also stressed the importance of strength and conditioning during the teenager's developmental years.

"From a physical development perspective, strength and conditioning work is absolutely vital at his age. This involves building a strong foundation of core strength, shoulder stability, scapular control, and overall functional strength. He also needs to remain comfortable managing the weight of his bat and the physical demands of his technique over longer periods."
