Vaibhav Sooryavanshi made a dream start to the Zimbabwe series by smashing a 50 off just 18 balls in the first T20I. In the second match, the left-handed opener could score only 20 runs. But he did not let that affect his confidence as he bounced back with a bang in the final T20I.
Batting on a slow pitch in Harare, Vaibhav played with maturity beyond his age. He scored a superb knock of 81 runs from 49 balls, hitting eight fours and four sixes. His innings helped India post 192/5, and the touring side later won the final game by 35 runs to complete a clean sweep 3-0.
The Bihar kid won the Player of the Match award for his match-winning knock, and his consistent performances across all three matches earned him the Player of the Series award as well. Amid this, Shreyas Iyer credits stand-in coach after India's 3-0 series sweep over Zimbabwe.
Vaibhav Sooryavanshi calls double award a dream come true
After receiving both the awards in Harare on July 26, Vaibhav said it was a dream come true to achieve these honors while playing for the senior Indian team.
He thanked everyone who supported him during his journey and also expressed his gratitude to the senior players and the coaching staff for their guidance.
Vaibhav Sooryavanshi said in the BCCI video: “Being named Player of the Match and Player of the Series while representing the Indian senior team is a dream come true for me. I am extremely happy and grateful to everyone who has supported me throughout my journey. I also want to thank the senior players and the coaching staff for their constant encouragement.”
VVS Laxman's special advice worked wonders for Vaibhav Sooryavanshi
The young batter revealed that before the final match, India’s interim head coach VVS Laxman and coach Rishi Dhawan encouraged him to play freely without worrying about pressure. That support helped him stay relaxed and play his natural game on the tough surface in Harare.
He added, “Before the match, head coach VVS Laxman and coach Rishi Dhawan spent a lot of time talking to me. They asked how I was feeling and gave me complete freedom to express myself on the field. Their message was simple—just play my natural game and not think about anything else.”
Vaibhav Sooryavanshi reveals how Team India made him feel at home
Vaibhav also said that he never felt like he was new to the Indian team because everyone welcomed him warmly. The senior players made him feel comfortable from the very first day.
He signed off by saying, “I never felt like I was a newcomer in the senior Indian team. Everyone made me feel comfortable, and it felt like I was playing just another match. Having Ishan Kishan in the team also helped because we are both from Bihar, so we share a good understanding and a similar vibe.”
