East Zone opener Vaibhav Sooryavanshi impressed with the bat during the Duleep Trophy 2026 final against South Zone on Sunday, September 6. However, the southpaw missed the half-century mark by just six runs before South Zone made the breakthrough at the iconic M.A. Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.
Sooryavanshi scored an impressive 92 in East Zone's semifinal win over Central Zone. The 15-year-old opened the innings alongside Abhimanyu Easwaran and helped East Zone make a strong start after Ishan Kishan opted to bat first against a South Zone bowling attack led by India pacer Mohammed Siraj.
Chama Milind Ends Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s Entertaining Knock
South Zone broke the 101-run opening partnership with a short-ball plan. Chama Milind bowled a short-of-length delivery just outside off, and Sooryavanshi went for the pull. However, he failed to get the required connection and the ball went high towards the leg side.
Substitute fielder Thyagarajan moved across to his right from the deep and completed a good catch in front of square. Sooryavanshi walked back disappointed after falling just six runs short of his half-century.

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi and Abhimanyu Easwaran Give East Zone Strong Start
Vaibhav Sooryavanshi and Abhimanyu Easwaran handled Mohammed Siraj well during the opening overs. They rotated the strike regularly and found gaps in the field to take East Zone to 18/0 after four overs. The pair then increased the scoring rate and took East Zone to 70/0 by the end of the 10th over.
After Sooryavanshi's dismissal, Easwaran continued to anchor the East Zone innings. The opener brought up his half-century and kept his side in control after South Zone finally made a breakthrough. At the time of writing, East Zone are 120/1 after 19 overs, with Easwaran (65) and Shikhar Mohan (10).
Easwaran's partnership with Sooryavanshi gave East Zone the platform to build a big first-innings total. His ability to stay at the crease will now be important as South Zone look for more wickets on the Chennai surface.
