Vengsarkar Was Annoyed Because It Was Just Net Practice And Javagal Srinath Came And Bowled Bouncer – Subroto Banerjee Reveals Enthralling Story

Former India National Cricket Team player Subroto Banerjee has revealed an enthralling story involving former India captain Dilip Vengsarkar and Indian pace-bowling great Javagal Srinath.

Speaking on Epic Channel’s YouTube show, ‘Mid Wicket Tales With Naseeruddin Shah’, Banerjee recalled a story from 1990 when Team India were preparing to take on England in a Test series.

Banerjee said that Bishen Singh Bedi asked young pace bowler Srinath to bowl at the nets and the pacer delivered a deadly bouncer on the first the ball itself, which had hit the handle of the bat of Dilip Vengsarkar and the bat flew off his hands, leaving him furious.

He added that Vengsarkar asked Srinath not to bowl bouncers in the practice session, which led to the pacer delivering a lethal toe-crushing yorker on the second delivery.

Banerjee also said that he was stunned to see Srinath’s sheer pace during the net session, something which he had never seen before in an Indian pacer.

“Bedi chucked the ball to him. He said, “Are you going to bowl?” He said, “Yes sir”. That was the first time I ever saw a bowler bowl that quick in India. He bowled a bouncer. It came straight and hit the handle of Vengsarkar and the bat flew off. 

“Vengsarkar was very annoyed because it was just net practice and he came and started bowling bouncers. He wasn’t prepared because the very first ball was a bouncer. Vengsarkar told him not to bowl bouncers. The second ball he bowled a straight yorker. And it went straight and crushed his toes,” he said.
