Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) director Mo Bobat opened up about the team’s struggles at venues like Chennai, Kolkata, and Mumbai, describing them as “just noise.” Bobat said that the fresh mindset helped the Bengaluru franchise secure away victories and eventually lift their maiden IPL trophy in 2025.
Royal Challengers Bengaluru ended their title drought in 2025 under the leadership of Rajat Patidar. Virat Kohli had captained the side for many years and came close in 2016 as runners-up. However, Patidar’s appointment as skipper changed their fortunes, leading RCB to their long-awaited maiden IPL crown.
Royal Challengers Bengaluru First Team to Win All Seven Away Matches in a Single Season
Royal Challengers Bengaluru became the first side to win all seven of their away fixtures in a single league stage. The Rajat Patidar-led team secured victories in venues where they had struggled.
Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Mumbai Indians (MI) managed seven victories in eight away games during the 2012 season. Gujarat Titans (GT) had also come close in 2023, losing only one of their seven away clashes.
RCB secured wins at iconic venues such as Eden Gardens, Chepauk, and Wankhede, alongside victories in Mullanpur, Kotla, Ekana, and Jaipur. The team suffered defeats to GT, Delhi Capitals (DC), Punjab Kings (PBKS), and Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), while their fixture against KKR was washed out.
The Only Person That's Done That Whole Journey Is Virat Kohli - Mo Bobat
Speaking to Cricbuzz, Mo Bobat said that the franchise had poor records at grounds like Chennai. He added that most players are new to the team, with only Virat Kohli having experienced the entire journey.
"People talk about RCB having never won in Chennai since whatever year, you've got to remember that that doesn't include most of us. That is one of the benefits of franchise cricket. The only person that's done that whole journey is Virat... the rest of us weren't carrying all of that baggage," Mo Bobat told Cricbuzz.
RCB Ended an 18-year Wait for an IPL Title Under Rajat Patidar
Former Zimbabwe cricketer Andy Flower took over as head coach of RCB ahead of the 2024 IPL season, replacing Sanjay Bangar. Under his guidance, the team reached the playoffs in 2024 and went on to win their first-ever IPL title in 2025.
Bangalore had previously reached the finals in 2009, 2011, and 2016. They consistently made it to the playoffs from 2020 onwards but were unable to advance to the final. During IPL 2025, RCB finished second in the league stage with nine wins from 14 matches.
In the playoffs, the Rajat Patidar-led side defeated PBKS convincingly in the first qualifier and faced them again in the final, winning a closely contested match by six runs.
Rajat Patidar became the first captain in the franchise’s history to lead the Royal Challengers to an IPL championship, ending an 18-year title drought. The franchise will be hoping to continue its winning momentum in the upcoming seasons.
