The chase master achieved the record of 15,000 ODI runs in international cricket and became the fastest to achieve the unique milestone on Sunday.
Virat Kohli has been the cornerstone for the Men in Blue side across formats. However, despite retiring from T20Is and Test matches, he continues to showcase his dominance in the 50-over format; he remains the best batter of this format, and he also has the most runs scored for India in this format after the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy, which shows his class.
Virat Kohli achieves 15,000 ODI runs
Virat Kohli needed 59 runs to achieve the milestone of 15,000 ODI runs. He achieved the milestone and became the fastest to surpass the record of his idol, Sachin Tendulkar, who smashed it in 377 innings, as the former India captain achieved it in 303 innings, as he smacked a four to reach the milestone. He took just 16 innings to get 15,000 runs from 14,000.
He reached his fifty in 40 deliveries and looked in fine touch from the very first ball he played in the match. He hit three fours and two sixes to bring up his half-century, with a strike rate just over 125 to score his fifty. He became only the second batter after Sachin to complete 15,000 runs, and the crowd erupted after he achieved the milestone.
India has been in firm control of the game, with Shubman Gill also scoring his 22nd hundred in the match. He looked in excellent touch in the game after he was dropped for 11 runs. He and Kohli are making the run chase of 296 runs look easy as they have already built a 139-run partnership for the second wicket.
The Men in Blue had a sensational start to their run chase as Rohit Sharma and Gill provided a breezy start as they stitched 74 runs for the first wicket, before the former was dismissed on 32 runs. He also broke the record for the most runs as an opener after 200 innings, surpassing Sachin’s record, as Rohit has scored 9897 runs.
