Virat Kohli, on Tuesday (October 1), played an unbeaten knock of 29 runs as India beat Bangladesh by seven wickets in the second Test at the Green Park Stadium in Kanpur.
Resuming the day on 26 for 2, Bangladesh were all out for only 146 runs in the second innings. At one stage, the visitors were on 91/3 and it looked like they would provide a good challenge to India. However, once Ravindra Jadeja dismissed captain Najmul Hossain Shanto to break the 50-plus stand between him and Shadman Islam, the floodgates opened.
From 91/3, Bangladesh found themselves reeling at 94/7. Veteran batsman Mushfiqur Rahim then played a handy knock of 37 runs but failed to find good support from the other end. For India, Jasprit Bumrah, Ravichandran Ashwin, and Jadeja claimed three wickets apiece.
Chasing a modest total of 95 runs, India lost the wickets of Rohit Sharma (8) and Shubman Gill (6) cheaply. However, a 58-run stand between Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shubman Gill all but sealed the game for India. Jaiswal was dismissed for 51 before Virat Kohli and Rishabh Pant took India home in the 18th over.
Another milestone for Virat Kohli:
While Virat Kohli did not score big in the recently concluded Test, he managed to add yet another feather to his illustrious cap. He has become only the sixth cricketer from India to hit 1000 fours in Test cricket. Former India batsman Sachin Tendulkar was the first-ever Indian to achieve the incredible feat.
Before the Test began, Kohli needed 7 fours to reach the 1000-four mark. In the first innings, he hit 4 fours during his 47-run knock. In the second innings, he reached the landmark when he hit the third boundary of the 4 fours during his unbeaten 29-run knock.
In the overall list, Tendulkar is occupying the top spot. He is also the only player to reach the 2000-four mark in Tests. Tendulkar hit 2058 fours in his illustrious career. He is followed by Rahul Dravid and Brian Lara. Among active cricketers, England's Joe Root has hit the most Test fours - 1343.
List of Indians who have hit 1000 fours in Tests:
2058 - Sachin Tendulkar
1654 - Rahul Dravid
1233 - Virender Sehwag
1135 - VVS Laxman
1016 - Sunil Gavaskar
1000 - Virat Kohli*
