Legendary West Indies fast bowler Sir Curtly Ambrose has elevated Team India’s batting maestro Virat Kohli to the same elite status as all-time batting legends Sachin Tendulkar and Ricky Ponting.

Kohli, often hailed as one of the greatest batters India has ever produced, is rapidly approaching Tendulkar’s epic world record of most international hundreds. Currently, Kohli has 80 international centuries to his name, trailing his idol and Indian cricket icon Tendulkar’s record of just 20 hundreds.

The dashing right-hander already broke Tendulkar’s record of most ODI hundreds. He achieved this milestone with his 50th century against New Zealand in the semi-final of the ODI World Cup 2023 at home.

While many have been comparing Kohli to Tendulkar for a long time, Ambrose has decided to avoid the comparisons, as he stressed that the players from different eras can’t be compared. However, the legendary pacer praised Kohli's prowess, claiming the Indian maestro would have excelled in any cricketing era thanks to his exceptional skill and adaptability.

Ambrose further mentioned that Kohli’s ability to dominate across eras places the former Indian skipper in the same league as cricketing legends like Tendulkar and Australian legend Ponting. Kohli has been cementing his place among the all-time greats with his stunning batting performances across the formats.

Virat Kohli could dominate any era: Sir Curtly Ambrose

Sir Curtly Ambrose was quoted as saying by Sports Tak: “Virat Kohli, the great man, someone who I admire as well, I love watching him. Don’t ask me to compare them (Sachin and Virat). I think I don’t think I know he’s a great player and how I judge players because people like to compare different eras. I don’t particularly like to do those things.”

The West Indian great further added, “But what I can say is when I look at great batsmen, how I judge them. Like presently Virat Kohli, is dominating today’s cricket, my question to myself is would he have done well during my era or before my era? I believe he would and because of that, that’s why I give him great. Sachin Tendulkar is the same thing, Ricky Ponting and these guys are great players because they can dominate any era.”

Meanwhile, Kohli has been struggling for form in the ongoing T20 World Cup 2024 so far, managing just 66 runs from five innings with an average of 13.20 and a strike rate of 108.19. Kohli, as an Indian opener, has not yet played any impactful innings in the ongoing mega ICC event.

Recently, a report suggested that Gautam Gambhir would drop Kohli, Rohit Sharma, Ravindra Jadeja, and Mohammad Shami after the 2025 Champions Trophy in Pakistan if they failed to deliver and India couldn’t win the tournament if he took charge as the team’s new head coach.

They will all be seen in action against Australia when India takes on Australia in the Super-8 clash on June 24.
