After openers Virender Sehwag (0) and Sachin Tendulkar (18) were dismissed early in the innings, Dhoni (91*) and Gautam Gambhir (97) were crucial to India’s victorious run-chase in the final.

India were 31/2 in 6.1 overs, chasing a 275-run goal when Gambhir was joined by a 22-year-old Virat Kohli, who subsequently stabilized the Indian innings with a critical 83-run third-wicket stand.

Kohli was eventually dismissed on 35, but their partnership provided a solid foundation for Dhoni and Gambhir to continue the chase.

Virat recalled the three words Sachin Tendulkar said to him soon after he was dismissed in the Indian innings’ seventh over.

“I recall the strain of stepping into the batter’s box with the score at two down for 20-something (2/31).” Both Sachin and Sehwag were ruled out. When I walked in, Sachin paaji had a little conversation with me. ‘Create a partnership,’ he added. And “Gautam Gambhir and I did have a partnership,” Kohli said.

When asked about the mood during the match, the former Indian captain said the emotions are still fresh in his mind 11 years after.

“I got 35, and that was the most important 35 of my cricket career.” I was ecstatic to be a part of getting the team back on track and to be able to contribute in whatever way I could. The pleasure of winning the World Cup was incredible in and of itself.

The audience singing ‘Vande Mataram’ and ‘Jo Jeeta Vahi Sikandar’ songs created a bizarre atmosphere. “It’s something that’s still fresh in our minds,” Kohli remarked.

On this date 11 years ago, Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s Team India defeated Sri Lanka by six wickets in the World Cup final at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, ending a 28-year drought for a title.
