India lift the T20 World Cup 2024
Earlier in the final on June 29, India won a thrilling game to inch South Africa by 7 runs and end their 11-year-long ICC trophy drought. The match swung from one way to the other with South Africa looking huge favourites at one time.
But India maintained their composure to remain in the game and made sure to lift the trophy this time. After electing to bat first, India scored 176-7, thanks to Virat Kohli's steady 76 off 59 balls and Axar Patel's valuable 47 off 31 balls. Middle-order batter Shivam Dube provided a vital contribution in the middle order to end with 27 off 16 balls.
Chasing a stiff target in the final, South Africa were rocked early by Jasprit Bumrah as Reeza Hendricks was bowled by an unplayable ball. Opener Quinton de Kock batted well for his 39 off 31 balls but lost his wicket at the wrong time.
But it was Heinrich Klaasen who looked determined to win South Africa its first-ever ICC trophy. Klaasen collected 24 runs off Axar Patel's last over of the game, leaving South Africa needing just 30 off 30 balls. But Jasprit Bumrah had other ideas as he bowled a sensational spell of 2-18 in four overs.
Hardik Pandya defended 16 in the last over for an improbable win for India as the players let their emotions out.
