Former Indian spinner Harbhajan Singh has made a massive statement regarding Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma featuring in the 2027 ODI World Cup. Harbhajan raised doubts about their participation in the tournament, adding that playing only the 50-over format could hamper their long-term prospects.

Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma retired from T20 Internationals after guiding India to victory in the 2024 T20 World Cup.

They will continue to play for their respective teams in the IPL. The duo also announced their retirements from Test cricket ahead of the ongoing five-match series against England.

Harbhajan Singh Opens Up On Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma Playing 2027 ODI World Cup

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Harbhajan Singh shared his thoughts on the possibility of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma playing in the 2027 ODI World Cup. He pointed out the challenges of staying competitive while playing only one format.

“It's too far, actually. It's been a very long time, and they are not playing any other formats. It becomes very difficult for anyone, no matter how much commitment you have or how big a great you are. If you do not play the game continuously, somewhere the game moves ahead and you are left behind,” Harbhajan said, as quoted by Sportskeeda.

Harbhajan Singh cited MS Dhoni’s example, sharing his IPL performances over the past few years. However, Singh refrained from stating whether Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma should take part in the 2027 World Cup.

“It will be hard. We have seen MS Dhoni playing in the IPL. Look at his performance in the last three years. You see the difference between this Dhoni and the Dhoni from six years ago when he was playing for India consistently,” Harbhajan added.

As per reports, India are set to play 27 One-Day Internationals in the lead-up to the 2027 ODI World Cup. They were scheduled to travel to Bangladesh for a white-ball series, including three ODIs in August, but the tour has been postponed due to political tensions between the two nations.

Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma are yet to secure an ODI World Cup title together. Kohli was part of India’s winning campaign in 2011. The pair came close in the 2023 edition, where India reached the final on home soil but lost to Australia. Kohli was the top scorer with 765 runs, followed by Rohit with 597.

They are expected to return to international cricket later this year for a series against Australia and South Africa.

Kohli is third on the list of all-time ODI run-scorers, with 14,181 runs in 302 matches at an average of 57.88 and a strike rate of 93.34, including 51 centuries.

Rohit has also enjoyed a stellar career, amassing 11,168 runs in 273 matches at an average of 48.76 and a strike rate of 92.80, including 32 centuries.
