Former Indian cricketer Yograj Singh requested Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma to reconsider their retirement decision from the red-ball format.
India will travel to England for their upcoming five-match Test series. India will lack experience in the batting unit after the departure of Rohit and Kohli in Test cricket.
Yograj Singh’s request to Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma
Yograj Singh urged Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma to return to the Indian Test team to save the Indian team on the England tour.
“Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli must return from retirement to save Indian Test cricket. This is not the time to think about themselves – it’s about the nation, the fans, and the deep emotions people have for the game. Virat still has at least ten years of cricket left in him. As for Rohit, if he comes to me, I will make sure he gets back in peak fitness,” Yograj told IANS.
According to Yograj, Kohli and Rohit are still fit and playing other formats as well. Yograj advised the BCCI to give support to their most experienced players.
Yograj Singh calls Yuvraj Singh
Yograj also called his son, Yuvraj Singh, to persuade Kohli against retirement. Yuvraj's father wants to send a message through his son that both Kohli and Rohit will regret their decision later.
“I told Yuvi to call Virat and tell him, ‘Don’t make the same mistake I did’. I’m certain they’ll (Rohit and Virat) look back and regret it a few years down the line. Because one day, the frustration will inevitably surface — but what will be the point then?’ he added.
Yograj told BCCI to put their ego aside and support their players. He referred to the 2011 situation, when Yuvraj, Harbhajan Singh and Virender Sehwag were dropped from the team without any reason.
Yograj Singh also scolded Yuvraj when he announced his retirement and told him not to take any decision under pressure, as he is still fit and can play for a few more years.
Will Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma’s absence haunt India?
Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma’s absence will haunt India in the England tour as the Indian team will be without their two most experienced players.
Both players scored a ton in the last England tour, and apart from KL Rahul and Rishabh Pant, no Indian player from the current squad has scored a century in English conditions.
The top order of the Indian team will be on the shoulders of young players like Shubman Gill, Yashasvi Jaiswal and Abhimanyu Easwaran.
Kohli and Rohit announced their retirement from the red-ball format in a span of just five days as Rohit announced his retirement on May 7 and Kohli announced on May 12.
