Though Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma's form is eminent enough to force the selectors to retain them in the Indian ODI side for the Australian tour, however, their future in the ODI team still remains a topic of debate.

The India vs Australia white-ball series will be played across both formats of the game and within a 19-day window. The series begins with One-Days starting from the 19th of October, while the 5-match T20I series will be played from the 29th of October.

This is a crucial series, as it marks one of the two series for India ahead of the next big ICC event. India has announced their squad, and both Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli have been picked for the Australia tour. However, there is a major twist in the plot.

Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma's future in the Indian team remains under severe doubt

The two veterans of Indian cricket, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, are all set to board their flights to Australia for the three-match ODI series. However, some massive changes have been made to the Indian squad by the selectors.

Virat Kohli is still a fitness role model at 37-year-old age, while on the other hand, Rohit Sharma has also looked determined with his new fitness regimen. In a major, shocking development, the Indian management has appointed Shubman Gill as the skipper of the Indian ODI side for the Australia tour.

With this latest appointment, Rohit Sharma's future has been thrown into severe uncertainty. The veteran opener might be dropped or compelled to retire from the 50-over format ahead of the 2027 ICC World Cup, which he wished to play as a cricketer.

Rohit Sharma goes down as the ODI skipper after having won the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, while he also won the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 as the captain of the Indian team. His only wish to win the ICC Cricket World Cup as a captain remains unfulfilled.

Jasprit Bumrah rested for the Australian tour

Considering the premier fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah's workload, he has been rested from the Indian squad on their tour to Australia. He is known to have an extensive record in Australia, despite which he has been dropped.

Jasprit Bumrah was part of the India tour of England and then featured in the Asia Cup as well. Bumrah has been picked for the West Indies Test series as well and will be considered essential for the South Africa series.

As a result of this, the Chairman of selectors, Ajit Agarkar, specified that he made himself available against the West Indies. The likes of Mohammed Siraj and Prasidh Krishna have been picked as pacers in the Australian side, while Arshdeep Singh is also included.

Dhruv Jurel pips Sanju Samson for India's second wicket-keeper slot

Indian wicket-keeper batter Dhruv Jurel replaced Rishabh Pant in the Indian Test side for the home Test against the West Indies. Jurel showed his utmost caliber with the bat as he scored a stunning hundred.

After his convincing performance in the opening Test series, he has pipped Sanju Samson, who was considered the likely option to replace Rishabh Pant. Though the team would feature KL Rahul as the first-choice keeper batter, Jurel remains an additional backup, who is unlikely to get a playing opportunity until Rahul is ruled out of any match.
