Former West Indies batting legend Chris Gayle recently shared his thoughts on Virat Kohli’s decision to retire from Test cricket. In May 2025, Virat Kohli stunned the entire cricket world by suddenly announcing his retirement from Test cricket—the format he loved the most.

The former Indian captain ended his glorious Test career on May 12 after an illustrious stint of 123 matches and a massive tally of 9,230 runs to his name. Reacting to Kohli’s move, Gayle believes that his former RCB teammate stepped away from Test cricket too soon.

The West Indies great also mentioned that the game will feel the absence of Kohli in whites, given his stature and impact on the game. Gayle described Kohli as one of the sport’s biggest figures and emphasized that his retirement left a massive void in the Test game.

Chris Gayle said on Shubhankar Mishra’s podcast on YouTube, “Oh yeah, very early. Very early. You know, for whatever reason, I don’t know, but Cricket will miss him 100%. Cricket will miss him. He’s a massive, massive figure for the game of cricket.”

Chris Gayle thrilled to celebrate RCB’s IPL 2025 triumph with Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers

The former West Indies batter also expressed his happiness about being part of the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) team that finally lifted the IPL trophy earlier this year.

He recalled the excitement of sharing the achievement with Virat Kohli after the IPL 2025 final, saying it was a special moment for the RCB and AB de Villiers.

Gayle further noted, “I’m just happy a guy like Virat lifted the trophy as well, because you know there was so much talk here and there. We’d been to a couple of finals together, so I was really overwhelmed to actually be a part of that RCB team, to lift the trophy. And just as I’m happy, I’m sure AB was just as excited for RCB as well.”

Notably, Gayle and De Villiers joined the RCB celebration on the ground and in the dressing room after they crushed the Punjab Kings and won the IPL 2025 trophy in June.

When Sunil Gavaskar’s prediction about Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma comes true

Meanwhile, former Indian captain Sunil Gavaskar’s old prediction about Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma has resurfaced. Gavaskar made that prediction during the 2012 Asia Cup, where Sachin Tendulkar played his last ODI game.

He had declared that Kohli and Rohit are India’s future during the India versus Pakistan match in Mirpur, and the legendary batter’s prediction turned out true.

Gavaskar had said at the commentary box, “I think we have glimpsed the future. The future of Indian batting. Rahul Dravid has just called it a day. We don’t know how long Sachin Tendulkar and VVS Laxman are going to be around. But I think that (Kohli and Rohit) is the glimpse of India’s batting future.”

Notably, both Kohli and Rohit have already retired from Test and T20I cricket, and now they are only active in ODI cricket. They will soon be seen in action in the three-match ODI series in Australia.
