Virat Kohli's childhood coach backed the Indian great, saying he doesn't have to prove anything after having such an illustrious career. Rajkumar Sharma, the coach, has also backed Rohit Sharma for his years of domination for India.
The India vs Australia first ODI will be played in Perth tomorrow, and Virat Kohli will be spotted donning the Indian jersey for the first time since the ICC Champions Trophy final. Both he and Rohit Sharma, the former Indian skipper, decided to pull out of the England tour and announced their retirement from the Test format.
Despite their return to the Indian Playing XI, doubts have been raised over the form of the two cricketers after such a long absence from international cricket, especially at this juncture of their careers, when each game holds large-scale importance to seal their fate for the upcoming World Cup.
"He is well prepared, and whenever he is well prepared, the results are always good," Rajkumar Sharma said about Virat Kohli
Rajkumar Sharma, Virat Kohli's childhood coach, believes that Kohli doesn't need to prove his worth as a batter, having impressed an uncountable number of times playing for India. Alongside praising his excellence, he has also expressed his confidence in Kohli's preparations for the upcoming tour.
While speaking to ANI, Rajkumar Sharma said, "Virat doesn't have to prove anything, he has achieved everything, the way he has played, the way he has won the matches for the country, everyone knows his contribution. He is well prepared, and whenever he is well prepared, the results are always good, and I have full faith that he will do well as usual."
There has been widespread debate on the form of the two Indian cricketers, and immense pressure has been mounting over them, as well as the selectors, over their participation in the forthcoming ODI World Cup in 2027.
"I would like to say that both of them are great players, and they have nothing left to prove" - Virat Kohli's childhood coach
While both Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli have expressed their desire to feature for India until the next World Cup, after having missed it so closely during the home edition in 2023, the decision doesn't entirely depend on the calls made by the two veteran cricketers. The BCCI Selectors, as well as the Indian management, have their opinions on their continuation.
With the current amount of talented players in India, the two greats have been asked to continuously prove their excellence to stay in contention; however, Rajkumar has mentioned that, considering the stature of the two in Indian cricket, they have nothing to prove.
"I would like to say that both of them are great players, and they have nothing left to prove, because the whole of India knows their contribution to Indian cricket, so if they have to prove themselves at this stage, then it will be a very funny thing," he added.
Virat and Rohit's fate should only be sealed after witnessing performances in multiple series
Previously, Aakash Chopra had mentioned that Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma should not be snubbed from any team without checking them over for a minimum of 2-3 ODI series. Considering the Perth pitch and the long absence of the two greats, their starts to the tournament might not be the finest.
He had also stated that for such big players, form cannot be predicted over just one series. The Indian management has, however, shown no such intent, as Gambhir has been hinting clearly that the two must perform in the Australia tour to retain their places.
