Virat Kohli is going through a poor run of form recently. The 36-year-old had a poor Test season at home as he struggled with the bat against Bangladesh and New Zealand. In the recently concluded Test series against New Zealand, Kohli scored just 93 runs in three Tests.
His diminishing returns have led to his criticism all around the cricketing world. Former India opener Aakash Chopra was also one of them. Chopra made a bold claim that Kohli does not have the same aura as Sachin Tendulkar and Vivian Richards like he used to have before.
Aakash Chopra speaks on Virat Kohli's poor form
While speaking in a video on his YouTube channel, Aakash Chopra spoke about Virat Kohli's poor form in Tests. He claimed that Kohli has just one fifty to his name in this Test season which is not a great sign of a batter of his calibre.
"Kohli also has just one fifty in 10 (Test) innings. If you see other than that, you will find that he left a lot to be desired. In fact, you can see his entire year. He didn't play the England series. I thought that was a big miss. The last five years' story is not good and the last 10 innings are not good at all," Chopra said.
Virat Kohli does not have the same aura like Sachin Tendulkar and Vivian Richards anymore - Aakash Chopra
The renowned commentator further mentioned that players like Kohli, Tendulkar, and Viv Richards have an aura around them. But that thing has been missing from Kohli's batting now as the opposition teams can get him out easily than ever before.
"(Virat) Kohli, Sachin Tendulkar or Sir Vivian Richards, these players have an aura, that once they come to bat, they would dictate. That sort of aura used to be there when Kohli used to come in. When Kohli comes in now, it seems like he can be dismissed without any issues. I am not saying that. You can see that from the opposing team's body language," Chopra opined.
Virat Kohli had various ways of getting dismissed in this series. He had a huge amount of trouble playing the left-arm spin of Mitchell Santner and Ajaz Patel, which was visible during his stay at the crease.
Not only he was troubled by the spinners, but he was run out during the first innings of the third Test at Mumbai. He found various ways of getting out and looked clueless at times. India's batting order suffered badly due to Kohli's form as they had frequent collapses.
"The error of judgement is happening repeatedly" - Aakash Chopra on Virat Kohli
Aakash Chopra further mentioned the types of dismissals of Kohli and claimed that the star India batter had been dismissed in various ways during the series. He added that the judgment error is occurring way more than before as he is not even able to judge whether he has got the edge or not.
"The error of judgement is happening repeatedly. Sometimes a full toss is missed and you take a run after hitting straight to the fielder on another occasion. Sometimes you don't know that you got an inside edge, and even the outside edge. You don't take the DRS once and take the second time, and both were wrong," Chopra claimed.
Virat Kohli's poor form was one of the reasons why India suffered a shocking 0-3 defeat to New Zealand at home. He will be under huge pressure in the upcoming Border-Gavaskar Trophy where India will play five Tests in Australia.
Kohli usually has a good record in Australia and will be aiming to regain his form. But it won't be easy for him as he will be up against a formidable Australian bowling attack.
