Legendary cricketer Sunil Gavaskar heaped praise on Virat Kohli following his 30th Test century during the Perth Test in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25. Sunil Gavaskar stated that this might be Virat Kohli's final tour of Australia and predicted more centuries from him in the remaining matches.
Virat Kohli entered the series after a poor home Test performance against New Zealand, where he averaged below 16 in three Test matches. However, Virat Kohli made a stunning comeback in the first match of the Australia series. He scored an unbeaten century off 143 balls in India's 295-run victory.
Virat Kohli Can Score More Centuries - Sunil Gavaskar
In a conversation with Sports Tak, Sunil Gavaskar said that Virat Kohli's century boosts the team's confidence for the next four matches. Gavaskar said that Virat Kohli can score more centuries in the remaining four Test matches.
"Yes, of course. Because when your most experienced and best player gets back in form in the first match, the team's confidence increases for the next four matches," Gavaskar told Sports Tak.
"The team knows that even though we lost two or three wickets, our strong player is ready. They are in form. And they... Because this could be their last tour of Australia. So he can score more centuries. There are four test matches. He can definitely make more centuries," he added.
The former Indian skipper scored just five runs in the first innings. However, he silenced the critics with the century in the second innings. KL Rahul and Yashasvi Jaiswal added a 201-run opening partnership at the Optus Stadium. Jasprit Bumrah won the "Player of the Match" for his bowling performance.
I Want Rohit Sharma To Come Back In The Opening - Sunil Gavaskar
Sunil Gavaskar said that Rohit Sharma should open the batting alongside Yashasvi Jaiswal in the remaining Test series. He added that Rohit and Jaiswal had formed a strong opening pair before this series.
"I want Rohit Sharma to come back in the opening because Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal have become a pair. Yes, Rohit was not there, that's why K.L. Rahul returned in the opening," said Gavaskar.
Rohit Has A Habit Of Pulling - Sunil Gavaskar
The cricketer-turned-commentator said that Rohit Sharma's batting style will suit the small square boundaries in Adelaide. Gavaskar also suggested changes in the middle order, with KL Rahul moving to No. 6 and Shubman Gill at No. 3.
"I want Rohit to come back because the square boundaries of Adelaide are very small. And Rohit has a habit of pulling. Pulling is a very productive shot for him. So he can make a lot of runs by pulling shots."
"No. 6 is KL Rahul. No. 3 is Shubman Gill. Dhruv Jurel didn't make runs in this (Perth) match. So, instead of him, KL Rahul will come to No. 6. I think these two changes will happen. Will there be any other change? Maybe he will change after seeing the pitch or not," Gavaskar added.
