One of  Sourav Ganguly’s close acquaintances and journalist, Boria Majumdar, came up with a series of tweets stating that Virat Kohli’s ODI captaincy is now in danger.

“This puts way more pressure. If India doesn’t win this T20 will he be retained as ODI captain? Lots of questions have come up and lots being already discussed,” Boria tweeted.

“The suggestion was Virat in red ball and 50 over format. Rohit in T20. BCCI doesn’t buy into this. They will see what India does under Virat in this tournament. If india wins all is good. If not can or will the BCCI continue with Virat in the 50 over format? He wants it but BCCI?” he further stated.

“Sources say there was a suggestion to appoint 2 white ball vice captains going ahead in the 50 over format. BCCI doesn’t want to do this. If Virat doesn’t win the World T20 can he remain captain in the 50 over format? Seems it’s very much up in the air,” Boria concluded.

Now, it seems all but clear that Virat Kohli will have a lot at stake, stepping into the T20 World Cup as the captain of Team India.

Virat’s Captaincy Has Been The Talking Point

Virat Kohli’s captaincy across all formats for team India has been legendary. However, he hasn’t been able to win an ICC trophy ever since assuming the red-ball captaincy in 2014 and the white-ball captaincy in 2017. This has been a massive concern for the BCCI and the fans and it is now in black and white that there has been a long discussion over Virat’s captaincy.

Under Virat’s captaincy, team India lost the ICC Champions Trophy final in 2017, the ICC ODI World Cup semi-final in 2019, and the ICC World Test Championship final in 2021 against New Zealand.
