Legendary Indian batter VVS Laxman, who is currently the head of the BCCI Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru, could soon get a much bigger responsibility in Indian cricket. VVS Laxman is reportedly being considered for the role of Director of Cricket.

The BCCI is all set to make some big changes in Indian cricket next month. Ajit Agarkar's term as chairman of the senior selection committee is expected to end in September, while India's coaching setup is also being closely watched following disappointing performances across the formats.

VVS Laxman is set for a much bigger role in Indian cricket.

As reported by India Today, VVS Laxman could be given the Director of Cricket position. If that happens, the legendary Indian batter’s responsibilities will increase a lot compared to his current role at the Centre of Excellence of the BCCI in Bengaluru.

It is also being said that Ajit Agarkar's term as the chief selector could be extended until June 2027. Earlier, there were reports that Laxman could replace Agarkar after his tenure ended in September. But now the fresh reports claim the NCA chief is set for a much bigger role.

Possible power VVS Laxman could get

Well, the exact role is still not clear because the BCCI is yet to finalize the structure. However, a Director of cricket could work closely with the senior team, selectors, coaches, the Centre of Excellence and young players coming through India's cricket system.

The role could also involve helping with talent identification, player development and high-performance planning. This would not be completely new work for Laxman.

He has already been doing similar work at the Centre of Excellence, where he has worked with players from the senior team as well as the pathway system. Amid this, Harry Brook announces IPL comeback after ban.

Laxman has already worked with India

VVS Laxman also has experience with the senior Indian team. He has taken charge as interim coach whenever the regular coaching staff were unavailable. The NCA head's latest stint came during India's T20I series in Zimbabwe.

He had guided the young Indian team in Zimbabwe as Gautam Gambhir and his regular support staff were rested after the England tour. Under Laxman, India won the series 3-0. That successful stint has once again brought his name into discussions about a bigger role in Indian cricket.

The timing of the possible appointment is very important. Agarkar's term as chief selector is expected to end in September. At the same time, India's recent results and the overall coaching setup have come under attention.

India is also preparing for the upcoming ICC ODI World Cup 2027, so the BCCI will want better planning and coordination between the selectors, coaches and players. So, a Director of Cricket could help connect all these departments.

If the BCCI finalizes the Director of Cricket role and gives it to Laxman, it would be a major promotion in terms of responsibility. Laxman could become the link between India's senior team, selectors, coaches and young talent.
