VVS Laxman mentioned as Tanvir Ahmed levels 'parchi' allegations against Gautam Gambhir regarding his head coach appointment

Former Pakistan cricketer Tanvir Ahmed fired shots at Gautam Gambhir after he was appointed as the head coach of the India National Cricket Team. He said that the former Indian opener has been included in the team based on the 'parchi'. 'Parchi' translates to 'receipt,' but among cricket fans, it is often used pejoratively. When used in this context, it implies that someone has been selected not based on their performance but through favoritism or other non-merit-based reasons.

India National Cricket Team entered the new era after the T20 World Cup 2024. Rahul Dravid's tenure as the head coach ended and it paved the way for BCCI to rope in the new coach. They then went on to appoint Gautam Gambhir in the role till the 2027 World Cup.

Since the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024, there have been a lot of talks around the Indian head coach. This come after Rahul Dravid didn't agree to continue his tenure as the head coach. There were a lot of rumors about the same and the prime name that emerged since then was Gautam Gambhir.

The position of Gautam Gambhir got even stronger when under his mentorship Kolkata Knight Riders won the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024. Since the past few seasons the franchise has been struggling to get going but the presence of Gambhir changed the fortunes of the team.

Along with Gautam Gambhir, there were quite a few names that floated around for the head coach. VVS Laxman also was among the talked about the name. This was because whenever Rahul Dravid and his coaching staff were rested, the NCA head was the head coach of the team.

But VVS Laxman reportedly didn't express his desire to take over the head coach. There were even reports which claimed that along with Gautam Gambhir, WV Raman was also interviewed by the BCCI for the post but the Kolkata Knight Riders mentor got the nod ahead and was roped in.

Gautam Gambhir hasn't coached any team and this will be his first stint as the coach of any side. He has performed the mentor role in the Indian Premier League. The former India captain was the mentor of Lucknow Super Giants for two years and also performed the same role at KKR this year.

As Gautam Gambhir was appointed as head coach of the India team, Tanvir Ahmed wasn't happy with the decision. He said the VVS Laxman should've been appointed as the head coach as he has been with the team for a long time. Taking to his Twitter account, he explained:

"VVS Laxman ko indian team ka head caoch hona chahiye tha kyun k woh india B k sath kafi time say head coach kam kar raha ha lagta ha Gautham Gambhir parchi par aya ha. (Roughly translates to - VVS Laxman should have been the head coach of the Indian team as he was working for a long time with the India B team. Feels like Gautam Gambhir hasn't been selected based on merit."

Gautam Gambhir's first assignment as the head coach of Team India will be the upcoming Sri Lanka tour. The team will be locking horns with the Island nation in the three-match T20I and the three-match ODI series, starting 27th July.
