As India finetune their preparations for the T20 World Cup later this year, former Indian middle-order batter VVS Laxman has opened up on the selection headaches. While India would remain the hosts of the T20 World Cup to take place in October, UAE has been booked as the venue. VVS Laxman believes that leggie Rahul Chahar could be an invaluable addition to India’s squad.
Rahul Chahar made his international debut in August 2019 and has performed decently. The 21-year old has been with the Mumbai Indians for quite some time now and has been a match-winner for them. The leggie has 41 scalps in 38 games in IPL at 24.41; however, he has taken only three wickets in as many T20Is.
But the youngster delivered an impactful performance in his One-day international debut recently, playing in the third game against Sri Lanka. Though Chahar conceded 33 in his first six overs without any success, the next four overs produced three wickets. He threatened to choke Sri Lanka from the winning position in a modest run-chase. But they got home with three wickets, albeit Chahar’s figures of 10-0-54-3.
If we are to strengthen or bolster one department, it is the spin department: VVS Laxman
VVS Laxman picked Suryakumar Yadav as the definite choice for the World Cup and believes Rahul Chahar could sneak into the squad. The 134-Test veteran said the youngster came back exceptionally well in the second spell in his ODI debut against Sri Lanka. Laxman also feels India need to bolster their spin-bowling unit and Chahar could be an excellent selection.
“Definitely, Suryakumar Yadav and Rahul Chahar. I was impressed with the way Rahul Chahar bowled in the opportunity he got in the final ODI, especially in the second spell. If we are to strengthen or bolster one department, it is the spin department. So, I will pick Rahul Chahar to get a chance in the T20 World Cup squad,” Laxman told Star Sports.
