Wanindu Hasaranga Bought By SRH For Rs 1.50 Crores In IPL Auction 2024

Sunrisers Hyderabad have secured Wanindu Hasaranga’s services for the next edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL). The Hyderabad-based outfit signed up the Sri Lankan spinner in the ongoing IPL auction 2024.

The 2017 IPL champions managed to sign the leg-spinner at his base price of Rs 1.5 crores. Sunrisers Hyderabad were looking to acquire a quality spinner after releasing England spinner Adil Rashid and West Indies’ Akeal Hosein last month. In Wanindu Hasaranga, they now have a quality leg-spinner. Before signing the Sri Lankan, Sunrisers Hyderabad had also signed up Australia’s Travis Head.

Wanindu Hasaranga was a surprise release by Royal Challengers Bangalore. The Sri Lankan leg-spinner is widely considered one of the best T20I bowlers in the world. He is also a handy lower-order batsman. So far, the 26-year-old has played 58 T20Is and picked up an impressive 91 wickets in addition to scoring over 500 runs. Overall, he has more than 200 wickets in just 157 T20s.

He began his IPL career back in 2021 with Royal Challengers Bangalore and played only two games. He proved his worth in 2022 by taking an impressive 26 wickets in 16 games including a 5-wicket haul. However, Wanindu Hasaranga failed to live up to the expectations in 2023 and managed a modest 9 wickets in 8 games. So far, he has picked up 35 wickets in 26 IPL games.
